Wasn't it hidden inside his flight locker at the air base? Sinestro informed him how dumb an idea that was for a Lantern.

Dunno how accurate this is, since I'm going off the recap from Tales of the Sinestro Corps.

He did keep it in "a secret pocket", but eventually a hole wore through it and the ring slipped out unnoticed -- where it was found by a young boy (who didn't realize he had the genuine article at first). Hal noticed the boy with the ring before he found out he lost it, and was amazed at how well the toy manufacturers managed to make a realistic-looking power ring.

Once Hal recovered the ring, he decided to keep it invisible on his finger from then on.

This story took place in Green Lantern v2 #11.
