Batman: Year One is the simplest story and while slightly dated, its still good. Though, if I'm trying to get real emotion out of someone, then I'd probably go with We3Comment

Always Watchmen. It's a masterpiece of the twentieth century that I think is accessible to non-comic readers but even deeper for those in that world. I've now convinced at least three people to read it (one of whom didn't read comics at all).
