I wasn't until the arrival of McGann that the doctors also became visually heroic before they'd taken any action, and it's that instant heroic aspect which upset all the established fans and buggered any chance of the series being revived off the back of the TV movie.

Did you not see the Craig Fergusson Doctor Who song? The Doctor is more about understated and cerebral success rather than the physical presence and I think we ought to get back to that, where you have an understated, placid personality who is a bit more matter-of-fact about the threats he faces.

If you haven't already, go back and watch some of William Hartnell or Patrick Troughton's episodes to get an idea of where I'm coming from.

besides, he's only 7 years older than Davenport, 1966 against 1973 or 46 (from next Friday) vs. 39

*shrugs* if you want physically heroic and acts younger, why not just get John Cleese to do it
I've seen quite a few Hartnel and Trouton episodes, but at the end of the day, all my favourate doctors look heroic (#1: David Tennant, #2: Paul McGann, #3 Christipher Ecclesten). I think Jason Flemyng is the perfect choice because not only is he getting older, but he has experience in the genre, and he's the nice place between heroic looking, dark, old, and not too pathetic.

Besides, he does not need to look heroic, but he can't be pathetic eigther.

For the record, Davidson looked heroic and if Collin was aloud to wear black silk like he wanted too instead of rainbow rags, he'd have looked heroic too.

Amy and Martha aren't that similar. Anyway, Oswin struck me more as a Romana—an intellectual equal.

        • I can see her being kind of a Romana/Ace mixture. Then agan the second Romana was more out going than the first one. And she is hot so that's always a help.

          • It's not been confirmed if JLC will be returning as Oswin or as another character.

Also, through the entire end of the episode, all I could think was "I THINK YOU MEAN DOCTOR WHOM!"

Well Romana II had the same intelligence/wit, but didn't flaunt it quite as much as her earlier counterpart.

Paul McCartney said that when he told his father about the Beatles success with "She Loves You" he replied that he was pleased but complained that he was contributing to the degeneracy of proper British English. Paul replied "I don't think think 'She loves you, yes, yes, yes' would've had the same ring'."

                  • Considering the trailer left me thoroughly unimpressed and expecting some variation on Night at the Museum in Space I was less disappointed by this episode than I thought I'd be.

If people were complaining about things being shoe-horned into earlier seasons, I'd be very surprised if they weren't also going to complain about the sudden and random acquisition of Nefertiti and Riddell who only seemed to be there for villain bait and dinosaur repellent respectively.

The end of Solomon was very refreshing - The Doctor now kills, apparently (he could easily do to Solomon what he (9) did with Jack in The Doctor Dances and rescue him later), it lends itself to a much darker doctor that we haven't really seen since Sylvester blew up the Gods of Ragnarok in Greatest Show in the Galaxy.

Brian on the other hand was refreshing. It's always nice to have an everyman character who's thrown into that situation and points out just how ridiculous it is - Loved the final scene with him sat on the stoop watching the world go buy - and feeling a little sorry for the Doctor who knows scenes like this with the Ponds are going to end all too soon. (whether he actually knows this and the circumstances or their departure, or whether he's just weary of inevitably outliving his companions if he doesn't leave them is another matter).

My biggest problem, though, was Brian not remembering the Doctor. Surely he was at his own son's wedding reception! Surely he remembers the TARDIS popping up and Amy climbing over a table to knock on its door!

Then again, Brian not remembering could be a third example of the universe having forgotten about the Doctor.
                    1st - Oswin deleted the Dalek's memory
2nd- Solomon's computer has no record of the doctor (or even time lords! Surely the last working TARDIS is more valuable to a hunter/rare items trader than Queen Nefertiti!!)
                    3rd - Brian doesn't remember the Doctor

We know Oswin deleted the memory of the Daleks but what if the effects carried further than just the Dalek memory. Daleks also have control of time travel, so could she have also either hacked into ever database ever and deleted the Doctor from all of them (very unlikely) or set up a cascading virus that jumped from system to system deleting the Doctor as it went (more likely, but still difficult and outlandish). Either way, the Doctor is reduced to oral folklore rather than a documented historical figure.

Personaly, I thought I was going to hate the episode, but it was alright until we got the gay sounding robots and the doctor ridding a dinosaur. The series has gotten far too comical for my taste, back in the RTD days, humour was used sensibly, but come on, the doctor ridding a dinosaur? Definately wouuld have never happened with McGann or Eccleston, maybe Tennant, probably not. Also, "the doctors gang" was plain stupid. I could tell Moffat wanted more characters in his episode (he could have fitted in characters in asylam of the daleks, but oh no, the only additional character was Oswin). Pure lazyness how they got what was it? A queen of Egypt and some explorer dude. Hated that. Liked Rorrys dad though. The robots were awfull, they used Mitchel and Webb as the voices. That much comedy does not work. Never liked guest stars that famous used so often (they're quite famous here in the UK, don't know about the US though). Should have given them actual robot voices. Not the voices of whinning comidiens.

One of the best Moffat series episodes, but that's hardly an ahivement.

Next episode, we're going to what looks lik the wild west, not sure if it's the actual wild west or just some cheap copy. Primeval is definately 10 times better than dr who at the momment. Primeval is still very enjoyable, while doctor who is just annoying that it's got so bad.

                      • Well, RTD did introduce farting aliens, so I wouldn't distance him too much from the humor side.

Anyway, I liked this episode overall. I'm glad to get a one-off with no clues about some end-of-all-things disaster. I don't particularly like Moffet's catch phrases ("basically, run"; "[blanks] are cool") including this episodes "I have a gang," but the gang itself was enjoyable. I like the idea of short-term companions. The dinosaurs were cool.

                        • I didn't really care for the episode. I thought it felt rushed and I didn't care for the gang. Would the Doctor really have taken Nefertiti out of her time line with the possibility of her being killed and then leave her in another time with a space age weapon. I did like Rory's dad though. I'm looking forward to the next episode, it looks good but you never know.

                            From her wiki:
About Year 14 of Akhenaten's reign, Nefertiti vanishes from the historical record. There is no word of her after that date. Theories include sudden death by a plague that was sweeping through the city or another natural death.
I think they were playing with that like they did with Agatha Christie's missing years.

But RTDs humour was more realsitic, there may avtualy be farting aliens out there, but a dude in his twenties while wearing a bow tie and a tweed jacket riding a dinosaur will never happen. It is impossible. Besides, I love the Slitheen, I hope they come back.

Hated how they just brought a group of random people together. And Moffats phrases like "I have a gang now" "hats are cool" and that lot are painfully bad. Moffat has ruined dr who for me pretey much. Primeval is way better than this right now.

Didn't really care for his gang eigther. It was too random. If Moffat didn't want two episodes in a row where it was practicly just the doctor Amy and Rorry, they could have fitted alot more characters in the last episode. I felt it was rushed. There should have actualy been survivours, and it would have worked alot better as a two parter.

I have low hopes for the next episode. RTD could have made both Asylam of the daleks and dinosaurs on a spaceship alot better than Moffat. I wish they'd fire Moffat.

It's fucking Doctor Who it's not meant to be realistic. A time traveler using a police box to go on adventures would never happen.
