  • I hope the next Doctor is a ginger, just so he shuts up about it. I know Tennant's regen said something about it, pretty sure Smith's regen said something about it.

It wouldn't bother me if the Doctor was a (hot) woman. Maybe we can stop getting the damsels in distress Companions.

      • I don't understand why people are shocked that Smith is leaving. Doctor Who has never been able to hold on to its star for long.

          • Dammit, Smith's one of the best Doctors, couldn't he have stuck around longer?

As far as the next Doctor goes I really really hope that it is not a woman. I do hope that the sonic is used less as a "weapon".
                yeah same here.

I just heard about this this morning, I had a feeling he'd announce leaving.

My first reaction was a bi of excitement as I do love a good regeneration story, then a bit of sadness as I've only just really jelled with Smiths Doctor and only really just got over Tennant's departure, and the final feeling was a feeling of dread as I realised Moffat is still on board for series 8 meaning the possibilities of a female doctor are higher than ever and possibly the highest they ever will be.

I really don't want a female doctor at all. That would just be so awful. If you asked someone in the street what doctor who was about, they'd probably say something like "it's about a man with a young girl or two traveling around time and space in a blue box". Now if we had a female doctor, she'd either be travelling around with a woman still (in this case Jenna Louise Coleman, she's still on for an eighth series), the cast would be to female dominated. If she travelled with a man, he'd most likely be a muscular man or one of these "pretty boys" and elderly relatives would keep getting confused and thinking he was the doctor, and he'd probably even make a better doctor so I'd trick myself into believing he's actually the doctor, and the only other option would be to have a man and woman travelling together as well. That'd mean an awful couple in the TARDIS again most likely like Rose and Mickey, and even worse, Amy and Rory. Families in the TARDIS don't work.

And even if a woman was cast right, they'd probably execute her wrong. I can imagine her stealing the sonic lipstick from Sarah Jane. And knowing Steven Moffat, he'll most likely make it corny as hell, he might even decorate the TARDIS effeminately. Diamond studded TARDIS console with pink roundels? I could imagine Moffat doing that. He's already made Smith wear purple after all.

No, my first choice for doctor #12 would be Idris Elba. He'd be the first black doctor and would bring a nice dark side to it like Eccleston did, even a bit more humour than him. Would be like Eccleston with a pinch of Tennant and even a hint of T. Baker. My second choice would be Being Human star Damien Molony. He's a relatively unknown and Being human is his only televised role so far, plus that's ended now, so I imagine Damien's schedule is pretty empty right now. He'd be very McGann like , and the humorous thing about him is that he'd be like someone's granddad and know nothing about stuff like modern pop culture. He'd probably think things like yoyos were cool with the kids. Smiths a bit like that too, but he's a bit more of a warm uncle figure. Molony would be utterly clueless about stuff like that and would be like that grandparent who buys their 15 year old grandchild a box or Lego or some other toy when they're already in their teens. My third choice would be Jason Fleyming. He'd be like a hybrid of Tennant and T. baker. He'd be a middle aged doctor like Moffat originally wanted to cast. He'd be humorous and a very warm character. Plus he'd be ginger, finally, a ginger doctor!!!!!!!!

No he didn't. He lasted 3 series and two specials. Unless you're counting the split series as two instead of one.

He was replying to the previous post. As in "Couldn't he have last 5 seasons?"

At any rate, I liked Smith's portrayal of the Doctor. It's mainly been Moffat's obsession with secrets and season-long arcs that has annoyed me.

                    • Ah right, and same here.

On this Star Trek forum, I'm getting fed up with their comments and opinions. They pretty much have completely the opposite view to me. All this shit like "Tennant was too eccentric" and "RTD gave us childish crap" along with "Moffat is god" and all that shit. Might just stop going there

So guys, now Smith is leaving officially, who do you want to portray number twelve?

                      • An Ad for SkyBet on Facebook informs that Chiwetel Ejiofor is the 7/1 favourite to be the 12th Doctor.
While this should probably be taken with an ocean of salt, I'd be more than happy to see him in the role - we've seen him play calm and sinister in Serenity and deeply emotional and comically daft in Kinky Boots.

He's still a bit younger than my ideal but it does seem to be the trend that young people don't want to see anyone over 40 on screen any more.

                        apart from:
                        Bruce Willis (58)
                        Robert Downey Junior (48)
                        Will Smith (44)
                        Jason Statham (45)
                        Dwayne Johnson (41)
                        David Tennant (42)
                        Daniel Craig (45)

Any more ridiculous than over 50s/60s(/70s!) actors rehashing old characters to make a bit more for the franchise?

I'm not talking about casting an 80 year old but there are plenty of older actors with the gravitas and energy who could play the Doctor:

Ian McKellen was pretty active in the LotR films, we've seen how well Derek Jacobi can bring an impressive performance.
Anthony Head may have been used for a villain, Don Warrington might have been the British president in Lumic's reality but both have a talent for establishing their authority on screen and have a diversity of roles.

Dude, you've got the sexual political understanding of a misogynistic Austin Powers.

It wouldn't be any more female dominated that it currently is male dominated - or is that the point you're trying to make? That you want there to be more men because girls are icky and have cooties.

So what if there are more women in recurring starring roles? That didn't affected the popularity of Sarah Jane Adventures (although it being aimed at kids might have done); Having Jolie, Jovovich or Charlize Theron and as three of the more prominent action movie stars in the 00's didn't make their films a riot of glitter paint, beauty salons or jokes about bra stuffing.

Admittedly, Doctor Who has a long history of TV totty, happily broken with the arrival of Ace, but both RTD and Moffat have for the most part managed to keep a respectable gender power balance.
Moffat has at least managed with both Amy and River to have two capable and assertive female companions who have both managed to hold their own with the Doctor. Moffat is not suddenly going to paint the TARDIS pink and turn the show into 'The Sisterhood Of The Time-Travelling-Pants', as it would be just as demeaning as having another screaming-on-cue companion.

Besides, when I suggested Judi Dench, it was with an idea of 'M' in space. Not even you can deny that a large part of (in Brosnan's case all of) what made the Bond films great was how Dench managed to be a perfect foil to Bond.

As for a male companion being a muscle-bound pretty boy, again (with the exception of RTD's Captain Jack) modern Who has done nothing but poke fun at that type of mentality (look at how the Doctor treats soldiers and UNIT) - Rory was neither ripped or pretty, but he had much more subtle strength and has been a lot of fans' favourite characters because of it.

I just envision the doctor as a man. And just look at films such as Catwoman. Female lead, not badly cast, but done so badly. That's what I'd see Moffat doing.

Plus if she was hot, all I could think about was sex and it'd distract me from the show. Then again, a lot of the companions make me think like that, so I might be wrong there, but either way, the actress to become the doctor if it ever happens will always be remembered as "the girl doctor" and would probably become a sort of joke like Colin Baker did.

Judi Dench? I don't want someone too old either. Old doctors are boring. Hartnel and Pertwee are the oldest doctors and my least favourites. I say go middle aged, about Ecclestons age would be right. Besides why bother replacing the doctor with a woman if it's just going to be Judi Dench? She looks like a man anyway.

                              • It's not that a female lead would be bad in a show like Doctor Who but I just don't agree with it being a part of Gallifreyian physiology. Even if the Doctor did say something about it in one episode. And it's just my opinion.
