  • Charity question.

Whenever people come to your door with a worthy cause behind them, how many of you dismiss them immediately or try to bullshit your way out of it?

I ask cause I finally managed to get some work after being unemployed for 4 months and just want to see how charitable the average is around here.

I just don't answer the door. These days, you don't if the cause is legit. In addition, you don't know if the money is going directly to the charity. Furthermore, it could be someone posing as a rep. that ends up pocketing all the money... and who would know? Nobody.

I'd say my wife and I are pretty charitable. However, we don't answer the door when a stranger comes a knocking. We donate at the office or shelter.

Once, a kid knocked on our door and says he was selling newspaper subscriptions for college. I offered up some cash, but he said he needed a check. I wasn't going to write a check because ID theft nowadays and my bank routing number and account number is on the check. Since I started to smell a scam, I asked "Why do you need a check?" The kid said, "well the guy I'm working for says he needs a check." I go, "He does?" Where is this guy? Where he's office? The kid said, "Well, he doesn't have one. He drives around in his car."

We don't take any cash. It's all direct debit now. Thing is as soon as someone says they don't feel comfortable with it then I'll either try to reassure or just leave them alone. I don't mind folk not wanting to but I had a guy with a Jaguar out front plead poverty with me.

If they're religious in any way I tell them I'm a Helioist then slam the door while they figure out what that is

As someone who does do fundraising I know how hard it is so if they're not being preachy I always do my best to stop and listen

Perfect example. I met a woman who was really open and friendly. She said she couldn't afford it since she was giving all her spare money to stop the church she has attended all her life from being shut. She was still really nice about it and I could tell she was at least concerned.

On the other hand I met a venomous old hag who talked to me like I was a fucking servant and said that the charity I work for is fundamentally wrong because it wasn't linked with "Christian Aid". If I wasn't sure it would get me fired I would have told her what a sanctimonious, dried up shrew she was.

Probably for the best that I'm not allowed to say stuff like that.

I dismiss them and usually quite rudely. Because fuck you. I have a television and a computer and access to the internet. I know there are parts of the world that could use what meager financial help I can offer and I've already seen to it that they get it.

I don't need every single do-gooder in the world who thinks their cause is the neediest to feel free to interrupt my life whenever the thought occurs to them.

AND just to be PERFECTLY clear... I've DONE charitable canvasing work before and I quit after two nights because I got tired of the abuse AND because I COMPLETELY understood where they were coming from.

An awful lot of them are outright frauds.

No one knocks at my door, and if they did, I usually dismiss them, no matter how good they look.
I do give to charities however. I am also of a Charitable organization and help as much as I can. Most door to door charities are, indeed, scams.
