  • Thomas Beatie is pregnant: world’s first pregnant man!?!

    This pic is for real!

Disturbing, I know... The first time I saw this photo I thought, how could this be? This isn't an bad movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger in... It’s not physically possible for a man to carry a baby. And then I read that the 22 week pregnant man, Thomas Beatie, is a transgendered male. Now it all makes since. Although the image is still a little startling.

Thomas Beatie recently gave an interview to the Advocate explaining who he is, his situation, and why he wanted to carry his own baby.

“I am transgender, legally male, and legally married to Nancy. Unlike those in same-sex marriages, domestic partnerships, or civil unions, Nancy and I are afforded the more than 1,100 federal rights of marriage. Sterilization is not a requirement for sex reassignment, so I decided to have chest reconstruction and testosterone therapy but kept my reproductive rights. Wanting to have a biological child is neither a male nor female desire, but a human desire.

Our situation sparks legal, political, and social unknowns. We have only begun experiencing opposition from people who are upset by our situation. Doctors have discriminated against us, turning us away due to their religious beliefs. Health care professionals have refused to call me by a male pronoun or recognize Nancy as my wife. Receptionists have laughed at us. Friends and family have been unsupportive; most of Nancy’s family doesn’t even know I’m transgender.”

As a legally recognized transgender, Beatie a legally recognized male, with all the rights and statutes afforded. In the state of Oregon, Beatie's home state, the government and state is recognizing him as a male–thus, in the technicality of it all, it’s the first legally recognized male pregnancy in the world.

            i say good for him...

if he wants to carry the child to term and have a natural birth, it's his right...

by all rights, as a legally recognized transgender male, he could probably take everyone that refused to give him treatment to the courts and sue them for discrimination.

I say good for him, he's made a stand and is sticking with it.

All these people can go to hell. It's none of their business nor concern, they do their job and thats it.

I'd sue each and every one of them, get rich, and provide my child with a kick-ass life.

Think his wife will have a kid too? That would be funny...

She says (and I'm sorry, I refuse to call her "he") "Wanting to have a biological child is neither a male nor female desire, but a human desire."

Sorry, that's wrong if you mean actually BEARING a biological child. That is SOLELY the province of the FEMALE, and everybody knows it. You can't have it both ways, insisting you are really a man, yet bearing a child.

I would agree that, should she choose to get pregnant, that is her right and anybody that refused her the treatment they would give any other pregnant female should be open to prosecution. However, only in a truly insane world would somebody that chose to undertake a fundamentally female action such as bearing a child be able to FORCE people to ignore that obvious fact and pretend that she was actually a pregnant man.

Frankly, and I know I'll catch flak for this, but I've never understood why people that believe (wrongly) that they are actually the opposite sex despite all physiological and genetic proofs otherwise are treated differently from any other delusional person. (If there were some genetic or physical ambiguity involved, that would be a different situation, IMHO.) Gender is not a choice, it is a biological reality. If I believed I was actually a dog, a couch, or the President of the United States, the rest of the world would not be legally obligated to treat me as such. How is this delusion any different? I saw a news program about people that firmly believe they shouldn't have any legs, and want to have them amputated. The medical community (rightly, IMHO) will not agree to fulfill their desire for radical, unnecessary body modification. So why do they agree to unnecessarily amputate OTHER healthy body parts simply because they conflict with the person's mistaken view of what they SHOULD be?

Let's not forget all the meds she'll have to stop taking throughout the pregnancy.

They shouldn't. I think a person has a right to their body. If I want to be a dog, a couch, a girl, or legless, that's MY body, MY right.

Of course, that's also MY opinion.

I do agree with you on one point. They can't force everyone to think a certain way. The doctor should not be forced to call him by he or her. The doctor had right, opinions, and beliefs too, and should also be respected. When you make a radical change and decision like this, you HAVE to give people some slack. You have to meet them half way with it. On the other hand, the patient has a preference, as a doctor who is giving services, you should respect that as well.

Yes. Wanting to have a baby IS a very human desire. It is not, however, a MALE desire to GIVE BIRTH. If you think you were supposed to be born male, and then one day wake up and go "Hey. I wanna have a baby!", then maybe you should be re-thinking that whole "supposed to be a guy" thing.

But. As a whole. Go them. Do your thing and be happy with it. As long as you are happy, screw everyone else.

Well, while I'd agree that it is your right to WANT those things, I'm not sure I agree that people should have a right to DO whatever they want to their body (and certainly don't have a right to EXPECT others to help them do it). Should people that are addicted to cutting themselves be left to it, or people that starve themselves because of a body image that doesn't match the reality?

Yeah, I don't really have a problem with them having a baby, and unless there are some kind of large risk factors involved in their unique situation I don't have a lot of sympathy with a doctor that wouldn't help them toward that end the same as any other couple (or individual for that matter), if that is their specialty.

it may be legally recognized as a man in Oregon but

federally it is a woman, you never lose the gender you are born with, this was recently determined when a X husband appealled his alamony because his X wife had a sex change operation

The courts rulled that his divorce states that he pays until she marries and that has not happened. and that she is a Woman by Birth and there by will always remain legally a woman.

also based on the issue of marriage and he being legally a woman she would not be able to legally marry a woman

so the X husband is basically screwed, unless his X marries another guy
