Disturbing, I know... The first time I saw this photo I thought, how could this be? This isn't an bad movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger in... It’s not physically possible for a man to carry a baby. And then I read that the 22 week pregnant man, Thomas Beatie, is a transgendered male. Now it all makes since. Although the image is still a little startling.

Thomas Beatie recently gave an interview to the Advocate explaining who he is, his situation, and why he wanted to carry his own baby.

“I am transgender, legally male, and legally married to Nancy. Unlike those in same-sex marriages, domestic partnerships, or civil unions, Nancy and I are afforded the more than 1,100 federal rights of marriage. Sterilization is not a requirement for sex reassignment, so I decided to have chest reconstruction and testosterone therapy but kept my reproductive rights. Wanting to have a biological child is neither a male nor female desire, but a human desire.

Our situation sparks legal, political, and social unknowns. We have only begun experiencing opposition from people who are upset by our situation. Doctors have discriminated against us, turning us away due to their religious beliefs. Health care professionals have refused to call me by a male pronoun or recognize Nancy as my wife. Receptionists have laughed at us. Friends and family have been unsupportive; most of Nancy’s family doesn’t even know I’m transgender.”

As a legally recognized transgender, Beatie a legally recognized male, with all the rights and statutes afforded. In the state of Oregon, Beatie's home state, the government and state is recognizing him as a male–thus, in the technicality of it all, it’s the first legally recognized male pregnancy in the world.

Thomas Beatie, the transgendered man who rose to national attention when he became pregnant, gave birth June 29 to a girl, People magazine and ABC News reported. He and his daughter are doing well, he told People.

Beatie grew up in Hawaii as a girl but later legally changed to a male identity, took hormone shots and had his breasts surgically removed, but kept his female reproductive organs.

A spokesperson from St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, Ore., where Beatie reportedly gave birth said she could "neither confirm nor deny the presence of that patient at our facility."

Beatie told People that despite published reports, the baby was not born via Caesarean section, but did not give any other information about the birth.

His wife Nancy, 46, was unable to bear children since she'd had a hysterectomy. Beatie became pregnant using donor sperm and artificial insemination.

“I opted not to do anything with my reproductive organs because I wanted to have a child one day,” he told Oprah Winfrey during an April interview. Nancy said she inseminated him with a syringe using sperm purchased from a bank.

The couple live in Bend, Ore., and Nancy has two adult children.


Nancy told Winfrey the couple's roles will not change after the baby is born. “He’s going to be the father and I’m going to be the mother,” she said. Their marriage is legal and he is recognized under state law as a man.

The couple runs a small business in Bend and has some savings, Nancy said. In addition, Beatie is working on a book about his childhood, his mother’s suicide and his life growing in Hawaii where, as a girl, he was a teen beauty pageant contestant and earned a martial arts black belt.

You know I have to agree with Geek.

This "person" is not "the first pregnant" man. What you had was a girl say years ago, "I wish God made me a man!" And she then proceeded to have the work down to be a man...only she had it half way done.

She then found another "real" woman who was willing to live with this "half job done" life.

Then somewhere somehow this "person" decides "Hey I miss being a girl! I know thanks to modern science I can get knocked up!" And this media whore, as Geek accurately killed him/her, insists on rubbing itself in the face of humanity and insists him/her is the "first pregnant male!"

Bullcrap! Have the damn kid and shut up!
