I've always been curious when tomb raiding becomes archaeology. I mean, if you dig up my grandfather's grave it's a crime, but if you do it in a thousand years it's archaeology.

I've always been curious when tomb raiding becomes archaeology. I mean, if you dig up my grandfather's grave it's a crime, but if you do it in a thousand years it's archaeology.

Tomb Raiding/robbing is a smash and grab and done without permission; Archaeology requires the site be surveyed before the excavation starts, permissions sought from the relevant authorities, slow and methodical excavation and [hopefully]* attentive recording of artefacts (no matter how unimportant they might be).

I was briefly on a dig in the centre of Miami in 2006 where a Neolithic Native American settlement was being excavated prior to a hotel being built. I that case the permission sought was from the city Council and the Tribal council associated with that area.

*I say hopefully as I'm currently working on an archaeological photographic archive and there's sod all metadata associated with any of the photographs
