Hallmark is going to prepare a card about graduates using actual pictures from this.

      It'll still be called racist.

Keep in mind, while this is cool, those AREN'T pictures of the event. That is a still from a NASA animation, depicting what it would look like. The actual event took place in another galaxy, FAR too distant to get that kind of detailed visual image. The article does have a composite photo of the event near the end, taken from several different types of telescopes, but it is essentially just a very, very bright spot from this distance.

If its any comfort, I don't think we would WANT to be close enough to get detailed photos like that, even with a telescope. That's a SUPERMASSIVE black hole.

I for one am satified with the cool NASA depictions and the detailed DESCRIPTIONS, if the alternative is possible gravitational disruption of our solar system and massive bursts of radiation heading our way.

I thought this thread was going to be about Snickers.

just out of pure speculation ed.... where do you stand on the whole worm holes are a shortcut to farther reaches in the universe debate?

My understanding is that "wormholes" are, at present, wholly theoretical, and even in theory are submicroscopic in size, and therefore useless for actual travel. They might have a use for communication, but as far as I know nobody has ever encountered one. (Maybe somebody has created one that lasted for some miniscule time period, I don't know.)

maybe thats something we need to look into. maybe even start sending a probe into one and see what happens

Have to be an awfully small probe. Submicroscopic, remember? A black hole is not a wormhole, by the way. A wormhole has been theorized as possibly connecting black holes, but they are not synonymous, and such a wormhole would be useless for travel (or even communication) it seems to me, because one cannot EXIT a black hole (and, really, one cannot ENTER one without being destroyed, either).

ok im confused. i always thought black holes were destructive and worm holes were a diffrent thing?

Sorry, I thought you were confusing the two, so I was trying to distinguish them. Black holes ARE destructive (incredibly so). Wormholes are a sort of shortcut through spacetime (or possibly into other universes) that are wholly theoretical. There are various theories about how a wormhole could form, and one of them involves them forming inside black holes, essentially connecting the centers of two black holes. This has led to some people (not understanding just how destructive black holes are) thinking that you could pop in to one black hole, and pop out another in some other place (see the movie "The Black Hole" for this idea). Since this thread started with a discussion of a black hole, I thought perhaps you were equating them with wormholes. We've never detected a wormhole at all, to the best of my knowledge, so we'd have nothing to drop a probe through, even if it could be small enough.
