My local paper gave this a poor review, but on closer reading much of the reviewer's criticism stemmed from the fact that he thought the movie was totally unnecessary, given the relatively recent and well received previous Spiderman origin movie. He didn't seem to be reviewing it as much on its own merits as in comparison to that movie. So while he seemed to have a few good things to say about this film, he just couldn't get past the fact that it being made at all was, to him, a "head-scratcher", and he didn't think it was as good as the previous outing.

So, I may check this one out when it hits the cheap theater or my local library.

According to Deadline it made 7.5 million from midnight showings. That's a lot for a Tuesday release, and it's about the same as Spider-man 3 and Iron Man 2.

I saw it last night at the midnight showing and I loved it! So awesome!

Mister Ed, don't wait. Go see it. DO IT.....NOW!!!!!

It really irritates me when all of the critics and some regular people compare it to the Raimi trilogy or complain that it's too soon. It has been a decade since the first one came out and you can't count Spider-Man 3 as an actual film because it sucked so bad. I am glad they rebooted it with all new people. It's a new Spider-Man. Get over it. It's a new suit. Get over it.

Sucked or not the movie still exists, so it still counts.

Sorry, with three kids, I've got limited opportunity to see movies in the theater (and limited funds to spend seeing them full price). My next priority is Brave, and then I'll be seeing Avengers when it hits the cheap theater. Spiderman is definitely behind both those priorities. There is no WAY I'm seeing it any time soon.

I think I'm going Thursday morning...
Now you'd never call Erwin a "Wussy"
Nor label his working day "cushy"
But you might have to question
                His endless obsession

Your parenting style is a little different than mine if you'd take a four year old to go see the new Spiderman film sight unseen. I've got a decent idea by now what my kids will enjoy and what will just freak them out, and I'm not prepared to categorize this film without seeing it myself.

So I'm guessing your not going to take your kids to watch Expendables 2 ?

I'm not even going to take myself to watch Expendables 2. Not my taste in movies.

I took my son to see the midnight showing last night. He absolutley loved it after being a solid fan of the last trilogy. Totally won him over. I thought it was really good and there are things I think they did better with this movie than the old series. Conversely, I think there are things about the old series that were better handled than this. But this movie was in no way a mixed bag, IMO.

Great special effects, and the movements of Spidey jumping, crawling, swinging etc were much better than in previous films. They seem to use some of that parkour shit for refference, and it works really well. More believable.

Kind of torn on the new kid. He doesn't look nearly Peter-like as Toby Maguire did, but his acting was so solid that I bought it anyway. You felt his emotional pain much better than Maguire made you feel it. He did seem way too much what girls like in boys nowadays, and not the social misfit Peter is supposed to be. This would be the kid girls would flock to in school so I found that pretty lacking.

And I was glad to be rid of the campiness. It was fun the first time around, but the old series doesn't hold up over time because of it. The serious tone of this movie worked maybe because of the extra humor they threw in to balance it out. Spidey does a lot more of the wisecracking and toying with criminals that he does in the comics.

The Lizard was pretty good and the effects on him were well done. I'm not a Spidey fan so I'm sure there are things that will piss off real Spidey fans that I'm willing to let slide or am ignorant about.

Honestly, this was a really good movie and washes the bad taste of Spiderman 3 out of my mouth.[
