Sad personal news again: my older sister just told my mother that a friend of hers committed suicide. Third person she knows who did that.

Dreary day at work: one of the servers had a family friend who was recently murdered in a street robbery. Killer stole their money, car, and life, leaving behind a devastated community and the guy's two young daughters. Police caught the killer but the server doesn't believe he'll serve more than 5 years (but she's saying this out of incredible duress, because unless the guy hands over information on domestic terror cells or some high-level shit like that, then his ass is in prison for murder one).

A lot of people underestimate how harsh the American criminal justice system really is. That's often a political thing. They tend to think sentences are light and prison is fun. But this guy might not ever get out, and even if he does, he'll be so old and broken down that his days of even thinking about committing mayhem will be long over.
