The Boston Celtics announced Thursday night that John Havlicek, one of the greatest players in the history of one of the sport's most decorated franchises, died at 79.

Havlicek played all of his 16 NBA seasons with the Celtics, winning eight championships, including one in each of the first four seasons of his career. Only two players -- Celtics teammates Bill Russell (11) and Sam Jones (10) -- have won more championships in NBA history.

      • TMZ reported today that John Singleton had died, but Singleton's reps have denied it.

BTW, he and Luke Perry suffered strokes. Singleton is 51, and Perry was 52.

Sad. Think I'll change my movie plans tonight.

Oh no, I was hoping he'd pull through. I enjoyed Boyz N The Hood, Poetic Justice, Rosewood, and even his Shaft reboot/sequel from 2000. I was curious to see what he would have done with the Luke Cage movie before the film rights reverted back to Marvel. My prayers go out to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

Sorry to hear it, but he lived a pretty long life for someone struggling with health problems and conventions gave him the opportunity to meet so many of the fans that loved him. If I had heard that day, I would've re-watched Star Wars.

He also retired from the role at the time, after Episode VII. By all accounts he was an outstanding chap.

Rachel Held Evans, an influential progressive Christian writer and speaker who cheerfully challenged American evangelical culture, died on Saturday at a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Evans, 37, entered the hospital in mid-April with the flu, and then had a severe allergic reaction to antibiotics, as she wrote on Twitter several weeks ago. According to her husband, Dan Evans, she then developed sustained seizures. Doctors put her in a medically induced coma, but some seizures returned when her medical team attempted to wean her from the medications that were maintaining her coma. Her condition worsened on Thursday morning, and her medical team discovered severe swelling of her brain. She died early on Saturday morning.
