Man... as a long-time Lakers fan, this hits hard. Iron Man Kobe was my avatar for the longest time on this board. The only other celebrity passing that affected me like this was when Michael Jackson died. Making things worse, his daughter Gigi was on the helicopter with him...

I was out on Sunday morning, and it didn't seem very foggy. But I don't know how much fog helicopter pilots can handle. Also on the tape the air traffic controller told the pilot he was flying too low just before radio contact was lost.

Broadcaster Nicholas Parsons has died at the age of 96 after a short illness, his agent has confirmed.
Parsons had hosted Radio 4's Just A Minute since its inception in 1967.
"Nicholas passed away in the early hours of the 28th of January," said a statement issued by his agent Jean Diamond.
"He was with his beloved family who will miss him enormously and who wish to thank the wonderful staff at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital."

John Andretti carved out his own niche in one of the world’s most successful racing families.
He became the first driver to attempt the Memorial Day double. He won on dirt tracks, street courses and superspeedways. He won an endurance race, competed in dragsters and became an iron man in IndyCar and NASCAR. And he used his platform and passion for racing to help others.
On Thursday, after a three-year battle with colon cancer, Andretti died at the age of 56.

Andy Gill, guitarist and founding member of the seminal post-punk band Gang of Four, has died. Surviving bandmates John Sterry, Thomas McNeice, and Tobias Humble took to social media to announce the news. “His uncompromising artistic vision and commitment to the cause meant that he was still listening to mixes for the upcoming record, whilst planning the next tour from his hospital bed,” the band shared. NME reports that Gill had contracted a “short respiratory illness” that left him hospitalized in the final moments of his life. He was 64 years old.

Gene Reynolds, the prolific director, producer and writer who was a driving force behind such socially conscious television series as M*A*S*H, Lou Grant and Room 222, has died. He was 96.
Reynolds died Monday at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, the DGA announced.
