The music world suffered an incalculable loss today with the report that Philadelphia rapper Malik B, a founding member of The Roots, had passed away at the age of 47. The news was initially confirmed on Twitter by both Malik’s cousin, former CBS News correspondent Don Champion, and fellow Philadelphian Reef The Lost Cauze, a close friend and collaborator of The Roots MC who was well-known in the 2000s as a member of underground rap supergroup Army Of The Pharaohs.

The co-founder of conservative student group Turning Point USA, Bill Montgomery, has died from complications of the coronavirus, according to two friends of his.

Montgomery, who started it in 2012 with young conservative star Charlie Kirk, died at the age of 80 on Tuesday from Covid-19, according to pro-Trump conservative strategist Caleb Hull, who posted about the death on Twitter and his personal Facebook page, and Chicago-based citizen journalist Vic Maggio.

Sonia Darrin, the actress and dancer who as the gangster girlfriend Agnes sparred with Humphrey Bogart's Philip Marlowe in the convoluted Warner Bros. classic The Big Sleep, has died. She was 96.

Darrin died July 19 of natural causes at a hospital in New York City, her son, onetime child actor Mason Reese, told The Hollywood Reporter. She had been slow to recover from a broken hip suffered in a fall, he said.

Former Boston Red Sox manager John McNamara has died. He was 88.

McNamara signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1951 but wasn’t much of a professional player. But though he was never ticketed for a big league playing career, he was recognized early on as manager material. He began that phase of his career in 1959 in the Kansas City Athletics’ system, working his way up and helping develop some of the game’s future stars such as Sal Bando, Reggie Jackson, Joe Rudi, Rollie Fingers and many more. He won three minor-league pennants — in 1961 with Lewiston, in 1966 with Mobile, and 1967 with Birmingham — before joining the big league coaching staff in 1968. At the end of the 1969 season, at the age of 37, McNamara was named the A’s big league skipper.

Alan Parker, the versatile British writer-director and two-time Oscar nominee who came from the world of commercials to make such features as Fame, The Commitments, Midnight Express and Mississippi Burning, has died. He was 76.

Parker died Friday following a lengthy illness, the British Film Institute confirmed.

Damn, and I was just talking about him earlier, and how I was sad that he was retired from making movies. His work is largely underappreciated. He made a lot of stylish musicals, but also some fine dramas. Mississippi Burning is a great movie featuring some of Hackman and Dafoe's best work, and Angel Heart is wonderfully ludicrous. Also The Commitments rules. RIP Mr. Parker.

Wilford Brimley -- an iconic actor who was the face of Quaker Oats for years, as well as a spokesperson for diabetes education -- has died ... a rep tells TMZ.

We're told Brimley passed away Saturday morning at his home in Utah. Sources with direct knowledge of Wilford's health tell us he was in an ICU wing of a hospital on dialysis, and very sick for days.

Prior to his career in acting, he dropped out of high school to join the Marines, serving in the Aleutian Islands for three years. He also worked as a bodyguard for businessman Howard Hughes, as well as a ranch hand, wrangler, and blacksmith. He then began shoeing horses for film and television. At the behest of his close friend and fellow actor, Robert Duvall, he began acting in the 1960s as a riding extra and stunt man in Westerns.

Ralph Barbieri, a Bay Area radio sports-talk legend, and one of the “founding fathers” of KNBR (680 AM), died at his home in Novato on Monday after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 74.

Barbieri spent 28 years at KNBR, where he projected a highly opinionated, abrasive approach that rubbed some listeners the wrong way, but also drew a legion of fans. Over the final 15 years at KNBR, he teamed with former NBA player Tom Tolbert in a popular afternoon show called “The Razor and Mr. T.”
