Sylvain Sylvain, the guitarist who blended punk aggression with glam rock peacocking as part of the band New York Dolls, has died of cancer aged 69.

The news was announced on his Facebook page, with a statement saying that he had the disease for two and a half years. “While we grieve his loss, we know that he is finally at peace and out of pain,” it adds. “Please crank up his music, light a candle, say a prayer and let’s send this beautiful doll on his way.”

    • ^I will play them again. I love the Dolls and believe they were really important to what became punk. 4/5 down now. Only Johansen is still kicking.

He was one of those actors who you knew his face but not his name.

US music producer Phil Spector has died at the age of 81, while serving a prison sentence for murder.

Spector, who transformed pop with his "wall of sound" recordings, worked with the Beatles, the Righteous Brothers and Ike and Tina Turner.

In 2009, he was convicted of the 2003 murder of Hollywood actress Lana Clarkson.

His death was confirmed by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

            My sympathies are very limited.

            • ^Yeah, you hear stories about him from the past and it's clear he was always over-the-edge. He also screwed up Let It Be with his wall-to-wall sound.

He was very influential and a genius producer, unfortunately all of those talents he had were hiding behind a much darker worse person, with a very twisted mind. It's rather unfortunate all things considered.

He had an eye for talent and facilitated some great acts, but his Wall-of-Sound approach to actual record producing got carried away.

                  • Sometimes the wall of sound worked extremely well, as on George Harrison's album All Things Must Pass. The combination of Harrison and Spector really clicked. I think it's the best solo Beatle album.

But more than a few people have told some awful stories about Spector. Once when he was mad at Ronnie he got up before she did and broke glass all over the floor of their bedroom, so she couldn't get out of bed. Another time he took their son to a restaurant and didn't buy him anything. When he had finished eating he pushed his scraps toward the boy and told him he could eat them.

Yep, that's one of the successes. It probably came from a combination of Harrison's lack of confidence in his vocals and a truer collaboration between the two (as opposed to Let It Be, which the Beatles pretty much handed it over).

                      • Harrison didn't like the experience and never worked with Spector again.

John Lennon worked with Spector until they had a falling out. Spector absconded with the tapes of several songs he recorded with Lennon, and they weren't released until after Lennon's death, as Side 1 of the Menlove Avenue album.

                        • ^That sounds familiar. Was Lennon the first one to suggest Specter for Let It Be? I know he was already a famous producer.

Spector produced Lennon's single Instant Karma. Lennon and Harrison then asked Spector to produce the Let It Be album. McCartney was angry with his bandmates by then and refused to have anything more to do with them. Lennnon praised Spector highly for the work he did on Let It Be.

Spector had his first big hit, He's a Rebel by the Crystals, in 1962. Be My Baby by the Ronettes was released in 1963 and You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling by the Righteous Brothers in 1965.

                            • Spector routinely carried a gun around and threatened people with it, but apparently Lana Clarkson was the only person he ever shot.
