I don't doubt it, but has a racial motive be confirmed? The first thing I heard was that he was a sex addict targeting what he thought were sex workers.

I've been a bit troubled to read some of the articles arguing that they need to make it easier to charge people under "Hate Crimes" legislation.Originally posted by Space Cop View PostI don't doubt it, but has a racial motive be confirmed? Apparently it is too much of a burden to be forced to show somebody had racist motivations in order to convict them of having racist motivations.
The attitude I'm seeing in some of these articles seems to be one that figures than anytime somebody in a minority group is the victim of a crime (at least by somebody outside that same group) it OBVIOUSLY must be a hate crime, and should be prosecuted as such.
I'm a little wary of the whole notion of "hate crime" legislation in the first place, because if it isn't applied carefully, it can easily become an attempt to have two wrongs make a right.
But I agree with the principle, in theory. The notion that crimes that target people simply because one hates the group they are identified with need special attention, and an greater effort to discourage them, makes sense.
But if you go beyond that, and decide that you no longer have to demonstrate that motive, but get to assume it (especially if you decide you can assume it only for certain groups), then you no longer have equal protection under the law. If you don't have to demonstrate a racist/sexist/etc. motive for the crime to qualify it for harsher punishment, but get to assume it when certain people are the targets of crimes, then you are making it MORE illegal to commit the same crime based solely on the identity of the victim. That's not a great precedent (and it certainly wasn't fair when applied in the other direction, before "hate crimes" were even a legal concept).

Lets not assume its race related yet. Also here'ssomething to think about why now with hate crimes against Asians? Unless i missed something like a current event involving Asians this seems random. Maybe the shooter wanted 15 minutes of fame and this deplorable action was his action? I think fame because all these mass shooters get glorified in the media magazines hell even documentaries and film. Its like leaving a legacy after death to be remembered and the copycats see and worship them like martyrs and heros. This is random and sorry for ranting but what is it with women who fall in love with people who murder there wives? Thats always bugged meOriginally posted by Space Cop View Post^Yeah, the guy is an evil nutjob whether he did it for sexual reasons, racial, or something totally random.Last edited by TazzMission; 03-20-2021, 02:30 AM................................................... ..........................

I don't like the concept of "hate crimes." When you do something to someone that's malicious, it's not because you like the person.

Yeah, I agree. I can't believe that if a family member of mine was killed that I would find it particularly worse if they were targeted by some demographic versus robbed and killed or randomly picked by a serial killer. It's all evil.Originally posted by Trey Strain View PostI don't like the concept of "hate crimes." When you do something to someone that's malicious, it's not because you like the person.

Police (one of whom, Captain Jay Baker, should definitely be kept from the case because of his own blatant racism) have said the killer was cooperating during initial interrogations and that the killer claims race was not the reason he murdered those people. It's still early in the investigation so whether or not race was the deciding factor is difficult to say.Originally posted by Space Cop View PostI don't doubt it, but has a racial motive be confirmed? Do note, the killer told a witness "I'm here to kill all Asians," and most of the victims were Asian.
And the police briefings were a fucking joke. I don't expect all the answers right away, but both Baker and that chief were absolute amateurs in speaking to the press and deserve to be criticized for embarrassing themselves in such a manner after such a tragedy.Villain Draft 3: Fourth Place Winner

It hasn't been confirmed, but the fact that Asians were largely attacked is a pretty good sign of what the killers motiviations were, and it doesn't look pretty.Originally posted by Space Cop View PostI don't doubt it, but has a racial motive be confirmed?
