Jim Fassel, the former New York Giants head coach who won NFL Coach of the Year in 1997, has died of a heart attack at 71.

According to Fassel's son, who confirmed his death to the Los Angeles Times, Fassel had a fatal heart attack while under sedation after going to the hospital with chest pains. Fassel lived in Las Vegas, and his son said that after he got the phone call about his father on Monday afternoon, the entire family started convening in Vegas.

Fassel had a long career in coaching, both at the college and professional levels. Following a brief playing career — he was drafted in the seventh round by the Chicago Bears in 1972 but never appeared in an NFL game — he transitioned to coaching in 1974. He spent the next decade coaching at the college level, mostly as a quarterbacks and receivers coach, before being named head coach at Utah in 1985.

A “passionate” Alabama TV anchor and former college football player who broke the infamous Bill Clinton tarmac meeting with then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch died Saturday, according to reports and his employer.

Christopher Sign, 45, was found dead Saturday morning by Hoover police in his Scout Terrace home, according to Al.com. The death is being investigated as a suicide, Hoover Lt. Keith Czeskleba said, according to the outlet.

“Chris was a tremendous leader in our newsroom,” wrote ABC 33/40 on Saturday in tribute to the reporter.

“He worked with our reporting staff on a daily basis, but also worked behind the scenes with the I-Team and with news managers on coverage of major events. You were very likely to get an email from him with a story idea in the middle of the night. He was passionate about journalism and showed it each and every day as he pushed himself and his colleagues to be the best.”

Ned Beatty, who made an indelible first impression in Deliverance before turning in noteworthy efforts in Nashville, Network and Homicide: Life on the Street as one of the most respected character actors of his time, has died, according to TMZ. He was 83.

Beatty reportedly died Sunday in his sleep at his home. Further details were not immediately available, but a source told TMZ that his death was not related to COVID-19. The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Beatty’s manager.

The Kentucky native also portrayed Lily Tomlin’s good ol’ boy hustler-lawyer husband in Robert Altman’s Nashville (1975), was a slippery Miami district attorney in Alan J. Pakula’s All the President’s Men (1976) and elicited laughs as Lex Luthor’s (Gene Hackman) bumbling sidekick Otis in Superman (1978) and its 1980 sequel.

        • ^I always loved Ned Beatty in whatever he did. I’d watch one of his movies (I have a few), but I’m watching a wrestling show now.

Mecka-lecka-hi, mecka-oh-no-no. Sad to report that we've lost one of the good ones. Actor John Paragon has passed at the age of 66. You probably best know him as Jambi, the sassy genie in a jeweled box on Pee-wee's Playhouse. An alum of the improv group, The Groundlings, he worked on several post-school projects with classmates Paul Reubens, Phil Hartman, and Elvira (Cassandra Peterson).

The White House on Saturday announced the death of Champ, one of President Joe Biden's dogs. Mr. Biden and first lady Jill Biden said in a statement that the 13-year-old German Shepherd "passed away peacefully at home."

"He was our constant, cherished companion during the last 13 years and was adored by the entire Biden family. Even as Champ's strength waned in his last months, when we came into a room, he would immediately pull himself up, his tail always wagging, and nuzzle us for an ear scratch or a belly rub," the statement said.

Joanne Linville, who played the Romulan commander in a memorable 1968 Star Trek episode and had scores of other screen credits, died Sunday. She was 93. CAA made the announcement but did not disclose a cause of death.

Linville began racking up TV guest roles in the mid-1950s, appearing on such series of the era as Studio One, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Kraft Theatre and Playhouse 90. She continued to guest on drama series throughout the ’60s, including such classics as Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The F.B.I., Route 66, Ben Casey, I Spy and a two-part Hawaii Five-0.

Of her work in that era, she might be most recognizable as Lavinia Gordon, the owner of a ruined Southern mansion in the Civil War-themed 1961 Twilight Zone episode titled “The Passersby,” which also starred James Gregory.

                          • She appeared in three episodes of Gunsmoke, This was probably the best one, and the best role she was given, written by John Meston when he was at his peak. Catch it if you can. It's shown frequently on INSP.

The American tycoon John McAfee, known for his antivirus, has been found dead this Wednesday in the Catalan prison of Brians 2, as confirmed by prison sources. The inmate's death occurs one day after the National Court approved his extradition to the United States, a country that claims him for alleged tax crimes committed between 2016 and 2018.

The well-known computer scientist was arrested in October last year at the El Prat airport and has been in the Sant Esteve Sesrovires jail (Barcelona) since then, when a search and arrest warrant from the United States weighs on him. This newspaper was able to interview McAfee from prison last November, when he assured that "life in Spanish prisons is like the Hilton compared to the abject surrealism and the dehumanization of American prisons."

According to the note issued by the Department of Justice of the Generalitat, prison surveillance officials and medical services have intervened after finding the body of the 75-year-old man, but have not been able to revive him. Finally the health have certified the death. "The judicial procession has traveled to the prison and is investigating the causes of death. Everything indicates that it could be a death by suicide," the statement said.
