George Frayne IV, who led the band Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, a group that combined elements of the rock counterculture with a love for roots music in the early 1970s, died Sunday at age 77. Frayne had been receiving treatment for cancer for several years.

“Early this morning, as I lay my head upon his shoulder, George’s soul took to flight,” his wife, Sue, said in a post on his Facebook page. “I am heartbroken and weary, and I know your hearts break, too. Thank you so much for all the love you gave and the stories you shared.”

Frayne’s seminal group was popularly best known for a remake of the 1955 rockabilly-flavored song “Hot Rod Lincoln” that made the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1972, peaking at No. 9, with some crossover impact on the country and easy listening charts.

The influential British electronic musician Richard H Kirk, best known as a founding member of Sheffield group Cabaret Voltaire, has died aged 65. Mute Records, which released several of Kirk’s solo albums and albums by the band, confirmed the news, describing him as a “towering creative genius who led a singular and driven path throughout his life and musical career”.

Robin Rimbaud, AKA electronic musician Scanner, paid tribute to Kirk’s work with Cabaret Voltaire: “Connecting the experimental side of Roxy Music with William S Burrough’s cut up techniques, their The Voice of America (1980) and Red Mecca (1981) remain utter gems of exploratory sound today.”

Kirk, along with Chris Watson and Stephen Mallinder, formed the group in 1973, taking their name from the Zurich nightclub that birthed the Dadaist movement and forging their sound via experiments combining music and technology. “Technology was always a catalyst,” Kirk told the PRS in 2016. “It allowed you to do things, especially if you weren’t the world’s best musician.”

Former U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, a conservative Missouri Republican whose comment that women’s bodies have a way of avoiding pregnancies in cases of “legitimate rape” sunk his bid for the U.S. Senate and became a cautionary tale for other GOP candidates, died late Sunday. He was 74.

Akin had cancer for several years, his son, Perry, said in a statement. He died at his home in Wildwood, a St. Louis suburb.

“As my father’s death approached, we had people from all different walks of life share story after story of the personal impact he had on them,” Perry Akin said in a statement to The Associated Press.

Alan Kalter, who served as the announcer and performed hilarious comic bits for David Letterman during his two-decade run on CBS’ Late Show, has died. He was 78.

Kalter died Monday at Stamford Hospital in Connecticut, his wife, Peggy, told The Hollywood Reporter.

The red-haired Kalter took over for the retired Bill Wendell as the Late Show announcer in September 1995 — about two years after Letterman moved from NBC to CBS — and remained through the host’s final program on May 20, 2015. On his first day on the job, Letterman tossed him into a pool.

Koichi Sugiyama, the composer of the iconic theme to Dragon Quest (and so much more), has died. He was 90 years old.

In a statement posted on the series’ website, it’s announced that Sugiyama died on September 30, of septic shock. In addition to composing the original Dragon Quest’s main score, so famous it was played as part of the Tokyo Olympics earlier this year, Sugiyama went on to write over 500 pieces of music for the series, in a career that spanned decades.

Sugiyama’s first piece of video game work was with the company then known as simply Enix, on 1985's World Golf. His last contribution was, fittingly given his history, the as-yet-unreleased next entry in the Dragon Quest series, Dragon Quest XII. His use of orchestral composition was pioneering in the video game space, and while we take live renditions of game scores for granted now, Sugiyama led the way with live recordings and performances as far back as the mid-80s.
