Journalist and political satirist P.J. O'Rourke has died. He was 74 years old.

Author and NPR host Peter Sagal confirmed the news of O'Rourke's death on Twitter.

"I'm afraid it's true," Sagal wrote. "Our panelist and my dear friend PJ O'Rourke has passed away. More later."

O'Rourke died from complications of lung cancer Tuesday morning, said Deb Seager, director of publicity at Grove Atlantic Inc. Books, in a statement.

O'Rourke was a Toledo, Ohio, native who evolved from long-haired student activist to wavy-haired scourge of his old liberal ideals, with some of his more widely read take downs appearing in a founding counterculture publication, Rolling Stone. His career otherwise extended from the early years of iconic humor magazine National Lampoon to a brief stint on “60 Minutes,” in which he represented the conservative take on “Point/Counterpoint,” to frequent appearances on NPR's game show “Wait Wait... Don’t Tell Me!”

O'Rourke was one of the first people who came from a background on the left but turned against the foul lunacy of political correctness. He savaged it with brilliant and hilarious jibes.

He was many years ahead of his time.

Julian Fowles, a film and television producer who worked at KCET and Esparza/Katz Productions, died in a hospital in Miami, Flor. on Saturday while recovering from a stroke. He was 76 years old.

Fowles’ death was confirmed to Variety by his colleague William Immerman.

Before operating in entertainment, Fowles graduated from Harvard Law School and worked as an attorney at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. His legal career led him to California, where he began to work as a contract attorney in the legal departments of Universal, Columbia and 20th Century Fox.

Fowles eventually began to pursue his dream of producing, joining the local Los Angeles public broadcasting station KCET as an executive producer of local programming. His credits include “Eleanor: In Her Own Words,” a one-woman show starring Lee Remick as Eleanor Roosevelt. “Eleanor” was the first local production to be picked up by PBS for the network’s “American Playhouse” series. The production also earned Fowles a Los Angeles Area Emmy award.

Brenda Deiss, a former NASA secretary who became an unexpected movie star with her role as a tough-talking matriarch in “Red Rocket,” died Monday in Clear Lake, Tex., from complications following a stroke she suffered in January. She was 60. A spokesperson for “Red Rocket” confirmed Deiss’ death to Variety.

Deiss came to acting late in life. In 2020, writer-director Sean Baker was scouting locations for a new film about a downtrodden porn star that would be shot in the area of Texas City, when he had a chance encounter with Deiss. After meeting her, Baker, who often casts first-time actors in movies such as “Tangerine” and “The Florida Project,” was convinced that she was perfect to play a pivotal supporting role in his new film. “We found our Lil!,” Baker declared to his team, and Deiss was soon cast as a Texas woman who allows Simon Rex’s Mikey Saber to live in the modest house she shares with Saber’s estranged wife, Lexi (Bree Elrod). Lil and Lexi remain mistrustful of Mikey, a deeply selfish man has run out on them before, but needs their help now that he’s fallen on hard times.

“In the short time we spent together, she created with us, laughed with us and shared her stories with us, some of them heartbreaking and others insightful and fascinating,” Baker said in a statement. “We all have people in our lives that change it for the better and Brenda was one of those people for me. I will miss her dearly.”

The thought crossed my mind that this might have happened to Bob Saget, because I once whacked the back of my head hard on a headboard in a motel room.

That was a reach, Dave. It can happen because you're unaccustomed to the dimensions of the bed and can misjudge how close the headboard is to you when you lie back.

                  • Procol Harum were actually two-hit wonders, with A Whiter Shade of Pale and the relatively less successful Conquistador to their credit.

A Whiter Shade of Pale is an astonishingly good song. John Lennon was a huge fan of it.

                    • A marvelous recording of this great song. And if you're unfamiliar with The Canterbury Tales, I recommend that you read The Miller's Tale.

Stand-up comedian and shock magician "The Amazing Johnathan" is dead after battling heart issues for years.

An assistant to Jonathan's wife tells TMZ ... Johnathan passed Tuesday night while at home "cuddling" with his wife of 11 years, Anastasia Synn. We're told a hospice nurse had been staying with him for the last 3 weeks, and confirmed he had passed.

The former Las Vegas headliner, whose real name was Johnathan Szeles, had been diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2007, and it's been a very tough road. The assistant says, "We have thought we lost him so many times that we never thought it would actually happen."

Sally Kellerman, the husky-voiced actress known for her Oscar-nominated portrayal of U.S. Army Maj. Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in Robert Altman’s M*A*S*H, has died. She was 84.

Kellerman, who also sang and had a Grand Funk Railroad tune written for her, died Thursday morning at an assisted care facility in Woodland Hills after a battle with dementia, her son, Jack Krane, told The Hollywood Reporter.

A native Californian, Kellerman had a memorable role in the third Star Trek episode, “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” in which she portrayed Dr. Elizabeth Dehner, a human Starfleet officer aboard the USS Enterprise. When Dehner sacrifices her life, her dying words to Capt. Kirk (William Shatner) are, “I’m sorry … you can’t know what it’s like to … be almost a god.”

I remember seeing him on the old MTV Half-hour Comedy Hour show. He was so different and unique.
