Ron Miles, a cornetist, composer, and bandleader who stood quietly within the first rank of jazz artists in this century, died on Tuesday at his home in Denver. He was 58.

The cause was complications from Polycythemia vera, a rare blood disorder, Hans Wendl, his longtime manager, tells NPR.

Miles had a warm and perfectly centered sound on cornet, with barely a trace of ferocity or flash. Through his playing, he could create the sensation of something both sturdy and precious — especially in the context of his own compositions, which combined a distinctly American harmonic palette with an openhearted emotional clarity uncommon in modern jazz.

"If you played a Ron Miles song right, in the best of moods you'd be crying," pianist Jason Moran tells NPR. "Because the songs were full. I equate it to the way John Coltrane made 'Lonnie's Lament.' He knew how to find the joy in a melody, and he knew where the heart was in it. Even just in the moment of playing them, it would just rush over you. A lot of music we play doesn't have that, it just doesn't."

That gentle yet self-assured musical temperament made Miles an ideal collaborator for guitarist Bill Frisell, in an association spanning nearly three decades, and drummer Brian Blade, in a range of combo settings. Miles led a trio with Frisell and Blade for several years, making a pair of exquisitely balanced albums. Miles and Blade also made up one-half of Still Dreaming, joining saxophonist Joshua Redman and bassist Scott Colley in a free-spirited tribute to the band Old and New Dreams, which featured Redman's father, Dewey Redman.

Charles Edward Entenmann, who worked to transform his family’s bakery in Bay Shore on Long Island in New York into a brand selling baked goods across America, died last month at the age of 92.

“I’m going to tell you something that’s been pretty much a secret, most of my life anyway,” his son, Charles William Entenmann, 65, told Newsday. “He didn’t eat Entenmann’s cake … He just wasn’t a dessert guy.”

Mr Entenmann died following heart complications on 24 February in Hialeah, Florida, according to his son.

He was buried last week at the Oakwood Cemetery in East Quogue, not far from Bay Shore. The younger Mr Entenmann said his father “was an extremely generous man”.

“He was just a really intelligent guy … He had a fantastic sense of humour and was always playing jokes on people and having fun. He did it right,” he added.

Mr Entenmann was born in 1929 at the South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore. The area is now known as the Entenmann Family Campus. He grew up working at the family’s bakery alongside his two brothers. Their father had moved the bakery to Bay Shore after their grandfather had started it in Brooklyn in 1898 after immigrating from Germany.

              • ^Sad to hear it. I liked him in everything I saw him in. If it wasn't kind of late and I wasn't already watching something in, I would've popped in one of his movies I own. I'll try to do that over the next few days. R.I.P.

Scott Hall, the wrestling star who revitalized the industry when he formed the nWo with Kevin Nash and Hulk Hogan, died Monday after being taken off life support. He was 63.

“WWE extends its condolences to Hall’s family, friends and fans,” the company said in a statement confirming his death Monday night.

The Maryland native had been in critical condition since suffering multiple heart attacks due to a blood clot that occurred after a hip replacement surgery, according to wrestling blog PW Torch.

The patriarch of Brooklyn’s legendary Di Fara Pizza passed away after 57 years at the helm of the renowned eatery routinely acclaimed as the city’s No. 1 pizzeria.

The death of Dom De Marco, 85, was announced Thursday in an Instagram post hailing the Italian immigrant who opened his borough business back in 1965, drawing crowds that often clogged the sidewalk outside while awaiting one of his unparalleled slices.
