I think taker had his most match losses during the aba time compared to the dead man version. He was portrayed as vulnerable. Losing to Brock like 3 times straight, the whole 'broken arm' storyline with Brock.

He just never went through the "we're going to turn you into a joke or a loser or a lost soul now because we can't think of anything else to do" stages that the other monsters had to endure. Like when Kane was kidnapped by DX and taught his first words -- "Suck it!"
