What is sad is that the above post will be seen as controversial by some, akin to an "all live matter" post. I was kind of shocked, when I looked into the statistics, to discover that more unarmed white people are killed by police each year than unarmed blacks. The numbers are still disproportionate, and that definitely needs to be addressed, but I was a bit disturbed by the fact that I couldn't remember the last time I heard ANYTHING in the news about an unarmed white person being killed by police, despite the fact that it actually happens more frequently.
Don't get me wrong. I think racism obviously plays a role in the disproportionate numbers involved. But I do think treating the problem as if it is JUST an issue of racism runs the risk of trying to apply solutions that don't address the whole issue of police violence.
I suspect (though obviously I don't have any expertise to back this up) that the issue is one of police (some police, anyway) having a tendency to treat people as guilty until proven innocent in certain situations, and also having very low regard or compassion for anybody they view as a criminal. The racism, I suspect (again, disclaimer, this is just my unprofessional speculation), comes into play when they are determining, in their mind, whether this person they are dealing with is a criminal. But once they have decided that you ARE a criminal, whatever your race, I think there are cops who are determined not to "take any crap" from you, and feel like you deserve whatever you get.
If I am at all right about this, focusing on racism alone (if successful) would just make the numbers more proportionate, not fix the overall problem. Fortunately, a lot of the demands for police reform that I've seen codified by larger organizations seem to address the issues of police procedures and tactics in ways that would (again, if successful) benefit ANYBODY that ends up dealing with a police response.
