Well, if it could be proven that the shawl is legitimate and several more independent experts verified the findings of this new method of testing, it would be pretty damning. As it is, I'm skeptical when the shawl is just said to be saved by a cop on the case and it happens to lead the guy who bought it (and who specifically states that he was looking for some new angle) to new evidence.

As Tazer noted, there's also the problem that he would've had to commit the last while under surveillance. And there's no explanation for his surgeonlike anatomical knowledge (unless I missed that).

And, as a side note, even if this could link him, it only links him to the one murder. Several credible Ripperologists have suggested multiple killers before (either a conspiracy or copycats) because of certain differences of method and logistical difficulties in the double murder.

In any event, this is interesting. Thanks for posting it, Tazz. I'm forwarding both articles to my mother who is a bit of a Ripperphile.

So... Jack the Ripper was some random dude. Anti-climactic. It would have been better not to DNA test the shawl. At least the legend would have stayed intact.

That's okay, according to Star Trek, the Ripper was an alien entity that possessed a human but moved on to other planets.

Also, I think Alan Moore did it.

not by todays standards; everything U've just said is circumstantial evidence & merely shows he had apparently got a hummer from the woman.....who WAS a prostitute.

Really? What evidence would you need to convict him?

Do you think that he. as a suspect in the killings, just happened to have sex with one of the victims on the night she was killed?

If someone paid big money for the shawl at an auction, they'd need to know it was the real thing.

How good was the surveillance in the 1890s? Not very good, was it?

Who cares how he got any knowledge of anatomy? That doesn't mean anything.

Hey, DNA evidence has been known not to lead to a conviction ... *cough* ...

He did "verify" it. He verified that the seller had claimed the item (which in and of itself was beyond the price range of a street hooker) was secretly taken by a cop over a century ago according to the family who was selling it.

I'm not saying it's definitely fake; just that I would be 0% surprised if tomorrow the next headline was that it was proven to be a hoax. This guy bought an expensive item; he wanted to present new evidence; and he's selling a new book. He's not even the first person to claim that the case was definitively solved. If the circumstantial evidence of the sex happens to prove this guy why doesn't Cornwall's theory of the artist who rendered accurate portraits of undisclosed crime scenes and who's leaving London happens to correspond with the end of the murders and the beginning of a new ones where he went? Critics (after the theory was allowed scrutiny) have explained why her case wasn't so airtight. Maybe that will happen again if we just let some authorities examine the evidence.

Also, as I said, it would only "prove" he killed that one. There would still be strong reason to suspect he didn't kill the last one and there has long been the theory that two of the victims were killed too close for all but a highly athletic, stealthy, skilled surgeon to have pulled off in time. They know almost for certain that the "from hell" letters were written by multiple authors, so it wouldn't be a stretch to say there were 2-5 killers.

All I'm saying is I'd like wide, independent (not hired by the guy writing the thesis) verification before I'd say it's definite.

this may seem way out of left field but what if the original ripper had some kids that took up the title? there is a theory that a child of a rapist could mimick behaviour similar to the parent from genetics.

na nothing like that. but it is an interesting theory though because who really knows what is passed down genetic wise ya know? science only knows so much same with psychiatry

Oh, I totally agree with you on genetics, whether it be physical or mental attributes because my sister and I are living proof. I just liked how Cop and Smasher were playing off each other like Mulder and Scully. Makes for a very interesting read on a very interesting subject.
