  • Lincoln Mall in Matteson to close after holiday season

    for my fellow illinoians

There’s just one more holiday shopping season at south suburban Lincoln Mall.

A judge has ordered the mall in Matteson closed on Jan. 7.

The judge says the owner is not properly maintaining the building.

The crumbling structure has been ruled a danger, with some sections demolished and faulty fire exits.

While the closure will impact the small stores that operate there, it won’t have an effect on the Carson’s that’s attached to it.

    Carson’s will remain open.

I bet it WILL have an effect on the Carson's. It just won't force it to close right away. I imagine having your store attached to a defunct and crumbling mall that has been closed down by the authorities puts a bit of a damper on business. (Though if the mall is in as bad shape as they describe it, being attached to it at all, open or closed, probably doesn't help business.)

I'd expect official corruption to be more likely to keep a poorly maintained, unsafe mall open, rather than forcing one that WAS safe to shut down. What would be the motive?

Still, regardless it has to suck for those who work or run small shops there. My sympathies to them.

The governor ran for office on a strict anti-mall campaign.
