My heart goes out to you, I couldn't imagine the anguish. I was getting teary eyed just reading what you were going through

Man, Ed, I'm sorry about that.

The sticks from the yard for you son's birthday sounds just like something I'd do for my daughter.

      Kids are the best. Sometimes.

Sorry to hear it Ed. It's sad that people usually outlive their dogs by so much.

Thanks. (Though it is probably for the best that it isn't the OTHER way around.)

Thanks again to EVERYBODY that took the time to slog through my cathartic wall of text and offered sympathy. Everyone (both here and elsewhere) has been so nice.

I mean, you'd kind of expect that, but as I was telling DOOM, one time in college my parents had to put down one of our dogs while I was away, and when I shared the situation with a group of friends, one of the girls in the group thought it would be a good idea to tell the story of when their dog was in similar straits but ended up getting better. After she was done, everybody in the group was just looking at her like, "What the hell?". She was known to be the clueless one of the group, though. I'm sure she didn't MEAN any harm.

I've just caught this(and I did take the time to read it all). I'm sorry to hear it Ed. I know I can't imagine the same pain you must be going through, but having been through loss like this myself, I understand being really emotional about it. It is a real shame that pets don't get to live longer.

As you said, you son's birthday should perk things up a little, especially your idea with the sticks. Finding anything to perk up spirits in a time like this is tough.

Again, I'm sorry for your loss.

Yeah, when my grandmother passed my one cat would wonder around and cry out (and she wasn't even her favorite person in the house). Dogs are even more attached to their people.

I figure it's one of those "light that shines twice as bright deals." To me cats are about 5 times as cool as people and they live about 1/5 the time. I'm sure dog lovers feel similarly.

dude let me tell ya a story if you dont mind. roughly 2 years ago i had to put down angel who was god maybe 15 or 14 as much as i hated the thought of getting it done it was more humane than letting the thing suffer. wich is why my mother ( who passed from cancer) stated to the vet in tears i wish we humans had this option because in her case nothing else could be done. so when we hear that its like i dont like it but its not the worst thing in the world either because between the chemo not working and continuing with other variations did a lot of damage to her.

sorry for getting a bit off topic but thats just my reply to you

                    Quick update.

I'm doing better. The birthday party went off well, the presents that looked like a bunch of sticks from the yard haphazardly wrapped in leftover paper and old funnies provoked amusement, not anger or disappointment, and my son received, from my parents, a stuffed African Wild Dog...which he promptly decided to name Sarah.

That's a good balance. He got to do the name tribute he wanted to without you taking the chance by getting a stuffed animal that looks too much like her.
