Only two Howard Johnson's now remain.

Odd, I thought there was a Howard Johnson's here in Portland. (Though I guess my impression was that it was a motel, not a restaurant, so maybe that's a separate thing.)

I seem to recall reading recently that 50 Blockbusters are still open, but I can't find an update on that.

That's sad. My grandparents used to take me there when I was a kid. They loved that chain. It was the place to go in their 20s and 30s. I have good memories going with them there.

Now I want my grandparents back. Thanks for making me sad dickhead!

Check it out. Maybe it changed names. There's one in my neighborhood and it still looks the same (still has the HoJo roof), but it was bought out years ago.

I checked on-line. Howard Johnson Hotels is still going strong, apparently. There are four locations in Oregon, alone. 30 in California. Looks like hundreds total, all over the world (list here). It must just be the restaurants that are almost gone.

It's funny but when I read the title for this, I thought it was going to be a repeat of Mister Weirdo's obit thread. My second thought was that it might be some kind of literary thread. No time (before I read post #1) did I think "I bet it's about the phasing out of HoJos."

Ha! When I read the title, I thought it would be a ritual / spiritual thread. Honestly I have no idea why I thought that.

Yeah, it does almost sound like a Buddhist title.

Spysmasher's clearly embracing his monk roots.

Restaurants that are shutting down rapidly: TCBY, Tony Roma's, Quizno's, Black Angus, Bennigan's.

I have fond memories of TCBY and Quizno's, not so much the others.

The last Deb Shops closed on March 30.

Abercrombie & Fitch, Aeropostale and American Eagle stores are closing all over.
