Y'know, I kind of sympathize with Gene Simmons on this. Rap to me seems qualitatively different. It does seem like there is something to the notion that you can expand the definition of something to the point where it becomes meaninglessness.

Now, it kinda sounds like Gene is actually trying to classify Rap as lesser, which (while I don't personally enjoy it) I wouldn't do. But I do think it is different to the extent that an argument can be made that it doesn't belong in the same Hall of Fame (though it is certainly possible that a single group could perform more than one genre of music, and gain entry to multiple Halls of Fame that way).

Agreed. There are shared roots but even Motown (a direct predecessor to R&B) can be pretty clearly separated from hip hop.

Well, yeah, that just sounds dumb. It seem like if you look at history you can see that any time somebody predicted the imminent demise of something they didn't personally like, they invariably end up looking like a fool for it.
