Probably Pink Floyd, for bands people know about.

Fear Factories Demanufacture and Obsolete are both pretty "epic" in scope - they deal with the futuristic nature of Man and Machine. Obsolete is actually a concept album, and tells a story.

Front Line Assembly has a couple "epic" albums in Millennium and Hard Wired. M deals with social unrest and societal corruption, while HW deals with Man Vs. Machine, and the enslavement of free-will.

Lord Belials The Unholy Crusade is also pretty "epic", its all about the armies of hell waging war, and defeating, the Christians.
