The whole injured lex storyline was shitty, and Tess was a mess of a character.
In reality once they started making clarks arrival and finding by the Kent's less of an accident and more of a pre ordained event it starts on the gradual slope downhill but the hill got really steep in season 7.
I think Smallville is one of those shows where it start to falter, they had half the cast leave and a creative change up, and it worked out for the best. Season 7 is incredibly on the weak side (with some positives laced throughout), but Season 8 really comes out swinging and while it's not a home run overall, it sets up 9 and 10 which are two of my favorite seasons. Lana needed to go long before she did, and her exit from the show was less than stellar. Though Lex's exit and return were both pretty perfect I'd say (though i'd still like to think the darth vader wanna be that blows up in a truck is a clone and the Lex in "Finale" is the real one lol).
One thing that started to get annoying with it was Jor el being all knowing and all powerful like he was physically there rather than a computer program.
Even worse, he had the power to put Clark through all these ridiculous trials and take away his abilities as he saw fit.
