  • HELP ME!!!

Hey guys. I need your help.

My mom doesn't want me buying any comics or comics merchandise (including any sort of GL ring) because she thinks all comic fans are losers. So I need help proving her wrong. I don't know how, maybe gather up a group of Decent looking, successful comic fans and tell me what they do or something. Anything! I just need to prove her wrong. I'd love to buy this stuff on my own. I have the money, but I'm only 15 and can't do it legally.

    HELP!!!

Tell her a lot of comic book writers go on to write movies, novels and television shows. Tell her you want to eventually get into the industry. Or spit out some numbers about how many people buy comics and how the SDCC is one the worlds most covered events.

that could help, but she's a woman. women don't listen to logic

      Her responses:
A lot of comic book writers go on to write movies, novels and television shows. - "That's stupid. People who devote their lives to that stuff are also losers"

I want to eventually get into the industry. -

I spit out some numbers about how many people buy comics and how the SDCC is one the worlds most covered events. - Either "They're all losers" or "That's not true."

Most of those who work in the industry are well payed and all.

        Define "loser"

Most of us here, have jobs, gfs and socials lives and we are still major fans.

If all she knows is of the negative side comic fans get hit with, show her the postive sides, much like was listed above. Mention some well known people in the world who are into comics, Stephen King is having his books illustrated over at Marvel, that is big.

Also bring up other types of books, ones that aren't super hero related that use this genre to help tell a story.

she doesn't care about the industry and the stuff they make and the amount of work and labor that goes into these comics. no, she cares about the owner of my LCS and some fat dude she saw at Wal-Mart in a Green Lantern shirt that he probably bought there
Not a loser is someone who doesn't look "weird" and I suppose makes good money, etc, etc.

So what is the fear here? Thay you will never grow up, find a girlfriend, get beat up at school? It's just another hobby. I have froends that can quote pretty much anything Trent Reznor has said or done, and give dates of when he did it.

Nicholas Cage is a comic geek, feh..looser
Hurricane Helms is a huge GL fan, bet nobody calls him out in public...
Obama, comic nerd...I bet he never moved out of his mother's basement...
Conan O'Brian probably will never amount to anything either..
              Is Seinfeld still a billionaire?

At a guess his mom is afraid that he becomes a social outcast and not one of the "cool dudes" from school.

Oh, My status really can't change. Everybody already knows I love comics. I actually bring trades I got from the library to school. I don't know what the problem is. I think she sees comic fans as:

Actually, she hates Nick Cage and Conan
I don't know who Hurricane Helms is
Do you have proof on Obama?
And then Seinfeld. But she doesn't say all, just most.

Naaah, that guy would be the same even if he never opened a comic even once. Then he would just be walking around Walmart in a Battlestar Galactica shirt or something.

I used to work with a guy who followed that exact description, only he was a Football fantasy league fan. A hard core fan. Only difference was he was not wearing a superman shirt. Those people are just that type, whether they are fans of superheroes, scifi, dungeons and dragons, or fantasy football, sports trivia, and classic punk bands, they are the "super fan" type.

                        I know. She doesn't.

I actually gave her Sam Jackson as an example. She said "Okay, whatever."

Statistically, teens who read comic books turn out to be stronger mentally and more righteous in their everyday life, more prone to good actions than bad. Ask her if she would rather you read comics and be a good person or join a gang and kill/rob people.
Do good. Be well. Make happy.
