It's a book noting the history of Hawkman from Flash comics #1 to problably today. It's not a story, but a series of articles, interviews, pictures, art, and other things covering the history of the character. They've done three for the JSA, and one each for Blue Beetle, Teen Titans, the JLA, and the Legion. There's a Flash one coming out too. They even have on on Sci Fi heroes of the 60s like Space Cabby and Adam Strange!

So the big question is, when are we going to see a Green Lantern Companion? I've gotta believe one must be in the works.

Isn't that kind of what the Secret Files (and all the Secret Files that have come out over the years) is?

Oh, the companions are MUCH better than that Andrew! Imagine a thick book with interviews past and present with guys like Gil Kane, Geoff johns, Len Wien, Perez, Adams, Grell, Englehart, Staton, Broderick, etc about their recollections of working on the GL strip. Imagine articles chronicling the history of the franchise from AAC #16 to the current Geoff Johns series. A book filled with pics of lost art, unused covers, comissioned art, and lost tiers of old strips. Imagine learning in interviews the secrets about why roads were or weren't taken at key points in GL publishing history. This is the kind of stuff you could expect from a GL Companion!

The JSA companions are a treasured part of my collection, and I KNOW you'd bust a nut over a GL one!

Only TWO Hawkman fans? I thought for sure there were three of us.

This is good news, TwoMorrows cranks out some outstanding publications.

They really do need a GL book too..

Wow - sounds cool...yes, I'm a Hawkman fan too - it's cool how he uses ancient weapons, and just barges in and kicks that ..booty. Would that book explain why recently the focus only on Hawkgirl? Or more about Hawkman's well-known but confusing history? I just bought the JSA tpb 'Return of Hawkman' since I missed those issues, to see what exactly is HM's status now.

I liked the Original Hawkman (the Original Carter Hall), but I kind of lost interest after the "petri-dish merge all 30 different Hawkmen into one" bullshit that they did in Zero Hour way back when. Oh, and I liked the Hawkman story line in the last volume of JSA (the return of Hawkman or something)

I liked both the golden age/Earth 2 version, as well as the silver age Thangarian revamp. Everything from Hawkworld to when Geoff Johns cleaned him up was a clusterfuck though. DC definately needed that moritorium they put on him for a few years to get the stink off.

As a JSA fan, I've always preferred the Egyptian E2 version to any others, so I was pretty happy with how he turned out in JSA when they brought him back. Better off leaving the Thangarian and all it's baggage behind and move forward like they did.

I imagine the Companion will get into the Hawkworld fiasco, but I don't think a lot of time will be spent on the current take of the character. I'm sure the bulk of the book will deal with the golden age material in Flash comics and All-Star Comics, and the silver age material from B+B, MIS, JLA, and his first volume that ran 27 issues. And the revamp that Isabella did with the Shadow material and the 17 issue series he did. A lot of great stuff to cover right there.

I myself got hooked up with the character by reading Hawkworld. I also loved the last series before OYL fiasco.

The Hawkworld mini series that Tim Truman did was in and of itself amazing. Great story and beautiful art. The problem was the editor Mike Carlin. Truman has wisely written it with the intention of being a "year one" style revamp, similar to Man Of Steel and Emerald Dawn. He assumed the ongoing series would pick up several years later in current continuity, and Hawkman's position n the JLA would be basically the same. Carlin unfortunately decided he wanted the Hawkworld ongoing to pick up immediately after the mini, and that the mini just happened. THAT was where the trouble really started. By the time DC was done trying to work out their new timeline problem, they came up with a history where there were THREE different Hawkmen in the JLA by the time volume 2 finished!

Of course, I honestly think the problems started the moment DC put E1 and E2 together after the Crisis mini ended. What are the odds that two different guys named Carter Hall that were of no relation would independantly come up with the idea to call themselves Hawkman and wear the same exact costume decades apart? I figured one day they would revamp the history to connect the two, but I had no idea they would fuck it up as badly as they did!

Anyway, the Companion's gonna be cool. Hawkman, despite the botched publishing history, has an interesting story, and a LOT of talented people have worked on the strip and the character over the years. I'm looking forward to it.
