Okay. As you might have figured out by now, my name is Michael Heide (which is pronounced "High Deh"). I'm 27, German, my first Green Lantern issue was #46 (vol. 2) in the German edition of "Reign of the Supermen". I liked Hal, I liked the powers, but I couldn't find any German GL comic books. And back then, my English was really bad.
Through the German edition of "DC vs Marvel" (which had a very short summary of Emerald Twilight in the back), I first found out about Kyle Rayner. And of all the heroes, he was the one I could relate the most to. And he was what finally made me hunt down non-translated US-comics. I started with #78 and soon had worked my way back to #48. While I obviously already knew about Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the Flash through various media, I actually got to know most of the DC universe through Grant Morrison's JLA.
When Judd Winick took over, I was less than impressed. It's funny. Before his first issue came out, he gave an interview in which he stated that Kyle is "not going to go in any wild directions [...]. I don't think it's fair to the readers to come in and say 'He's gonna shave his head, quit being an illustrator and move off the Earth.'"
Yeah, right. Two costume changes and a haircut later, Ben Raab moved Kyle off the Earth to tell Hal stories, just with Kyle in Hal's role. For the first time since I started collecting US comics, I dropped the book and only came back for "Homecoming". I read Rebirth, but mostly to have a bookend for my Kyle run. I was not interested in reading Hal stories. Back then.
Fast forward a year, and a guy at the Newsarama boards complains that DC won't publish a TPB with Johns' GL stories. Geoff Johns asks him for his adress and sends him Green Lantern #1-12. I was impressed. I gave his GL a try, mostly to pay Geoff respect for that. And I was hooked again. I managed to get all of the issues I had missed and immediately put the book back on my pull list. When Green Lantern Corps started, I didn't have the money to commit to a second GL book. Later, I got a better paid job and got into GL Corps just in time for the Sinestro War.
When I'm not reading comics, I'm a student (Translation and interpreting), I work for the local subway company, and I love playing video games (especially on Wii). I'm writing my first graphic novel (very slowly), and I hope I'll be able to visit the States next year. It'll be the first time since 1985.
