  • Guy's personality

One side of this has been debated already in the What's Still Canon? thread, in regards to Guy's brain damage. But since threadomancy is somewhat frowned on, I'm going to start a related discussion here.

The consensus seemed to be that the brain damage was repaired by alien genetics/Guardians/whatever but his personality didn't revert to it's pre-damaged state.
Now that's fair enough, the brain was repaired but the original structure and all the 'wiring' couldn't be restored so Guy was less irrational but still a jerk.

I'm wondering about restoring Guy's original personality, what effect would that have on him and his behaviour? (I started reading at the creation of Mosaic so have never seen a pre-damage Guy)
What effect would it have on his relationship with the GLC and wider DC community?
What effect would it have on the fans?
Would it be a worthwhile, if temporary, development in the book to have Guy revert for a story arc?

Actually, I always thought that his current personality was probably closer to his true personality than that of his pre-"Brain Damage". Guy was beaten by his father, an alcoholic, as a child and had a history of being in trouble with the law as a teenager. He quit his job as a social worker because he worked with prisoners and felt that brought out his aggressive side. This was all before he was hit by the bus. Guy had been repressing his personality for years. I think that his time in the coma, Phantom Zone etc, just let the true Guy Gardner out.

This is exactly why Guy is such a great character, topics like this. It is so hard to please the fans with how he should be portrayed. Hal is a lot easier as with Kyle and John. Guys direction is harder than Kyle's which makes him less of a pain to write. The fact that he is so hard to figure out means we will have Guy around for a long time.

Tomasi needs to stop writing Guy as Ben Grimm.

Guy is a more subtle and complex charcter than that.

But I suppose if Kyle can be Peter Parker with a power ring, then Guy can be Ben Grimm with a power ring.

I did not even know this about Guy. Interesting
I LOVE conspiracy theorists. They are like human versions of the cymbal clapping, dancing monkeys. No one takes them all that seriously and they get bored with them after about 10 minutes.

Props to Giffen and DeMatteis for making him the wise ass he is today and to Beau Smith that showed he can be DCU's badass.

Everyone else is just trying to copy the formula or trying to make Hal sound the same way.

*Side Note Guy's Vuldarian/Warrior powers completely cured his brain damage to the point where it seemed like it never happened. Guy was alot more likeable then. Still assertive/aggresive but not the asshole he used to be and that Johns has retconned him back into being*

Beau Smith was the best Guy writer ever. Not Tomasi sure as fuck ain't Johns.

Its disgusting that a writer like Beau is not working for DC while certain hacks are still cashing paychecks from DC.

It's funny, I thought of this thread yesterday while watching Big Trouble in Little China. I think if your trying to sum up a non-brain damaged Guy, Jack Burton is a live action copy. Cocky, a smart ass but isn't a John McClane or Jack Bauer on man army.
