Was there the threat of him changing ethnicity? I've always been wildly confused by this line.
Have you ever heard the saying that "All you have to do is stay (insert ethnicity) and die"? One of my friends would always say that. In the comic, Parallax is threatening to kill John so John says all he has to do is stay black, taking away the "and die" part of saying.

It's not a quote from Shaft. It's just an ancient saying adopted by Blacks to illustrate pride in their race. Johns probably threw it in as a gag, hoping it would sound cool.

I'll presume you're joking.
"I don't have to do nothin' but stay black and die!" is a direct quote from the 1989 film Lean On Me, said in of its most famous scenes by lead actor Morgan Freeman.
Lean On Me was a biopic about the famous New Jersey high school Principal Joe Clark, who was famous throughout the 1980s for his unconventional approach to education and discipline.

I wasn't joking. That saying has been around LONG before Lean on Me, trust me. I still think Johns put that in as a gag, nothing more.
