Have you ever heard the saying that "All you have to do is stay (insert ethnicity) and die"? One of my friends would always say that. In the comic, Parallax is threatening to kill John so John says all he has to do is stay black, taking away the "and die" part of saying.

It's not a quote from Shaft. It's just an ancient saying adopted by Blacks to illustrate pride in their race. Johns probably threw it in as a gag, hoping it would sound cool.
