John and The Marines

With John's sniper take down in Sinestro Corps its gotten me wondering if soon we'll see a slight retcon of John's history to add what was done in the Justice League and JLU animated series, that John Stewart served in the United States Marine Corps for a time.

Though its never been mentioned in his comic history there is nothing to say he didn't serve and that's how he paid for his college to become an architect. Might also explain his serious hate of authority if his service expiriences were bad.

Just a thought. Because John forming a rifle and being the one to take out the Sinestro Corps sniper seems a bit of an odd choice.

Keep in mind the DCAU has effected regular DC continuity before. Harley Quinn, Livewire, and Mister Freeze current origin all hail from the DC Animated Universe.

I guess I could live with it, but if they do I hope they make every effort to preserve his existing history.

I dont see any problem with inserting a small National Guard backstory that way it would not effect any time frame 1 weekend a month 2 weeks a year and all that (I notice those ads have stopped running though)

Well if anything, he just might have gotten sniper training outside the military, although I have no idea where and how. Who knows, maybe when hes off panel, he plays Halo all the time.

not bad, however that act could also be justified by simply having been trained by Kilo (it would be much less of a retcon & much easier to accept IMNSHO)

however, yur take does flesh out his non-GL life more granted........

NRAMA: Oh yeah. And you had said before that Guy and Kyle would be featured mostly in Green Lantern Corps. And that you will be focusing on Hal and John in Green Lantern. In specific, what is John Stewart's role? Because Kyle and Guy are working with the Corps, right?

GJ: Kyle and Guy will be working with the Corps, and then Hal and John will be working in unison. But also, we have a lot of big plans for John Stewart next year. We're going to be fleshing out John's backstory. It starts with a couple things in #26. You're going to see more John Stewart and who he is. We're going to continue to push the idea that he's the best shot in the Green Lantern Corps.

NRAMA: Right. Like when he took out...

GJ: He took out Bedovian. He's the best shot. There's a reason for that. We get into that in that backstory. We get into where else he's gone. There are plans and ideas for John Stewart beyond Green Lantern. Hopefully those will come to fruition. But John Stewart's a hell of a character, and he'll be getting as much spotlight as all the other GLs.

NRAMA: When you say outside Green Lantern, he's in the Justice League now, right?

GJ: Yeah, he's in Justice League. So that's great, and he'll get more exposure in Justice League...

NRAMA: It was pretty defining how the Anti-Monitor was taken down in this issue by a combination of Guy's creativity and John's administrative skills.

GJ: Yeah. John's a leader. He doesn't screw around.

Maybe I'm just seeing what I want to, but I think my prediction five months ago might have been right.

Y'know, when I read that, I wondered the same thing.

Although, if you really think about it, that reasoning would be pretty thin. I mean, would a little time in the Marine Corps really explain why John Stewart is the best marksman out of several thousand GLs, some of whom might be from alien species that have certain NATURAL advantages in that area?

I'm a former U.S. Marine, but I honestly don't think John needs the retcon to make him tougher or more interesting. Like Andrew mentioned, I suppose I could live with the added background, provided they don't lose the intellectual/philosophical warrior aspect that makes John unique.

Nived's prediction could very well be on the way, I just hope whatever they do, they do it well.
