I like the retcon. It perfectly worked in the Justice League animated series. Ooh Rah! And John has still kept his architect background. But I don't want to see him reduced to a sniper only. That get's lame after a while and doesn't fit for a GL that he only constructs sniper rifles.

I have liked John since Englhart put some effort into him back in the 80s. There are problems with the character in that he's not clearly defined enough; at least to the writers. Angy black man. Architect. Willing student. Over confident failure. Apartheid activist. Cripple. Marine. Streisand fan.
I think his backstory and inconsistant personality, along with the lack of an iconic origin like Hal, is what has always kept him on the back burner. If not for those, he would have had his shot in '94 and they wouldn't have needed to invent Kyle.

I remember in rebirth they emphasized the Architectural side of John and how you could see every nut and bolt holding his constructs. That was really cool I also though they were gonna revisit that route when they were reconstructing Oa with Ganthet's input on ancient Oan architectural designs "They were far "sturdier.""Green Lantern Unlimited!

I would have sworn I replied to this thread before. Maybe there was another like it.
My view is that it is FINE to add the Marines into John's background as flavor, and to perhaps explain a skill like his sniper ability, but it bugs the heck out of me that, all of the sudden, it isn't just that he was a Marine, but that his being a Marine has become the defining element of his character. So many of his constructs now come from that, and when we read his internal narration, THAT is the primary way he seems to identify himself.
I'm fine with him being an architect who served in the Marines, but not too thrilled about him being a Marine who just happens to have an architecture degree...

If theyre gonna use his Marine background as his main image, they should be able to come up with more cool constructs for him than just a sniper type rifile. Arent there more weapons in war than just a rifile? SMMFH
