  • Guy Gardner with a yellow ring? (in the 90's)

    Hello everyone,

I was at one of my local comic book shop the other day and picked up some cheap back back issues of the JSA. On one of them Allen Scott fights Guy Gardner who is wearing a yellow ring! What's up with that? Is it after Parallax destroyed the GLC? If so, how did he get a yellow ring?

Back in GL Vol.3 #25 Guy fought Hal for the right to be GL of Sector 2814. This was Guy's idea, mind you, not Hal's. It was ALSO Guy's idea to INSIST that the loser of said fight would not only lose the Sector GL spot (this was back when there was only one GL per Sector), but would have to quit the GLC entirely.

Unfortunately for him, Guy lost the fight, and therefore also lost his GL ring. Shortly thereafter there was a 3-part miniseries chronicling Guy's road back to being a hero, called Guy Gardner Reborn. I really liked it, and the end result, after some humorous attempts at heroing using guns, he came up with the idea of grabbing Sinestro's old ring for himself, which he successfully did, taking it off Sinestro's corpse in the GL crypts (this was BEFORE Sinestro was inexplicably resurrected by the Guardians for Emerald Twilight) fighting off Sinestro's spirit in the process.

There followed what I thought was a brilliant chapter in Guy's history, where he had his own title, and used the yellow ring to do his own brand of superheroing without having to answer to anybody (with the wrinkle that he needed to charge it off Green Lanterns every so often).

Sadly, when Emerald Twilight brought an end to the Corps, and TPTB decided that Kyle HAD to have the ONLY power ring of ANY kind in the DCU, Guy lost his yellow ring (and Alan Scott lost HIS ring as well, and became Sentinel, and John lost his Guardian powers and became a Darkstar), and things went downhill from there (IMHO). Guy still had his own title, but to replace the ring he got weird new powers and a really crappy (again, IMHO) new backstory with him somehow being the last of a line of ancient, alien peackeepers that morphed their bodies into living weapons. Guy still got some pretty decent character development during that period, but it was, for me, really offset by that stupid "Last Vuldarian" angle.

Thanks, that explains alot. When I read GL: Rebirth I was wondering what the F' was up with Guy being some sort of shape-shifting alien.

No sign of the "Vuldarian" powers since GL: Rebirth, if I'm not mistaken. So what ever happened to the yellow ring when it was "lost?" Downstairs archives of the Guardians with the Gauntlet, maybe? Would be a fun place to explore.

I think Hal destroyed it during Zero Hour

Guys ring was destroyed in the issues right after Emerald Twilight in a 4 part in Guy Gardner's run called...Emerald Fallout.

A story penned by Beau Smith because the good folks at DC wanted to make the Kyle the only to have a power rang (green or not). Because of that we got the Vulderian Powers, and the rest is history.

DC back then was about moving forward, for better or for worse. I actually liked Guy with the yellow ring.

I first saw Guy in the "Death of Superman". He is using a yellow ring then. No idea back then that he was Green Lantern.

I hope we get Guy's new origin soon. I want to see what's still in continuity and how he became a GL in the first place now that COIE never happened.

I'm fairly positive that most of the stuff will be intact, with GL staying the same despite the Relaunch. Of course we may have a few minor tweaks here and there.

I wish I had your optimism. GL wasn't limited to minor tweaks even before the relaunch. I cannot imagine, given an even more wide open opportunity like the Relaunch, that it will stick with minor tweaks at this point.

Indeed. The heavy retcons can and will continue.

I think they're keeping backstory to a minimum so they can decide what fits or not later.

Oh yeah, I see it now in the indexes. I didn't catch up with Guy's (first) green ring getting taken in #25 until this week either. I'm still about 150 issues behind in Volume 3 (of about 25+ years behind over-all!). Thanks for posting.
