    What the FUCK was THAT?!?!

I just read GLC #18, and it was beyond terrible. Garbage. I honestly can't believe Tomasi wrote it. First off, the art was REALLY bad. The layouts were sloppy, the anatomy poor, and the faces barely looked like people. The weird facial expressions Crisscross gave John and every other black person were almost creepy. I keep thinking of that painting from the intro to the 70s tv show Good Times. I kept expecting Aunt Jemima to jump out at me when I turned the page. Sadly, the great Gary Frank cover is very misleading.

I don't like shitting on Tomasi because I generally like his stories in GLC. His first run is among my favorites in the GL books of the last 20 years. But this ENTIRE issue was a big epic fail.

John Stewart's new origin is that he was the son of a slain politician? And she died in front of him? Why? Even if you wanted to commit to that horseshit (and I see no reason why anyone would), wouldn't you want to do it in an actual story devoted to it and not as a snippet in a larger story?

Also, the incredible lameness of the first lantern as a villain is really front and center here. This guy is just a huge goddamn mort. When he was still a mystery at least it was up to our imaginations what he was all about. When I didn't know anything about him he was a lot more interesting in my head. Now that I've seen his MO and him doing his villainy in an actual story, he just comes off as the drizzling shits. And we've got 2 and a half more months of this piece of shit? Remember how lame Blackest Night got when we got about 70 issues of zombies emotionally torturing various characters in the DCU, over and over and OVER again? This is the SAME fucking thing!

1 star, and this issue only got THAT out of me for Gary Frank's cover. They should be ashamed.

I didn't think it was terrible, unlike everyone else it seems. But the issue could have used a bit of focus. If it was about John being wrong in killing Mogo or Kirrt, then it would have been better focusing on those events rather than everything they could throw at it and have John die a bunch of times. Fatality shouldn't have even been in the issue at all. Not that I don't like the *idea* of exploring her character, but John should've had the issue all to himself.

Didn't like the art, though. Why did the CrissCross think Fatality was Boodikka? Especially when he did draw Boodikka herself in the issue? Didn't think that splash page was worth the trouble to edit?

Agreed. Volthoom was only Mind torturing John and making him tap out with different scenarios of his death.... Difficult choices John has to make. Art could be better though! Glad John will be written by a brand new author soon... No more mistreating and backup lantern or support cast Shit and back to his to glory days!!! Give the poor black guy his own unique storyline already!

It's not an error, reread GLC #60. When John channeled the black energy he still had the indigo insignia on his costume. Just like when any indigo channel energy the spectrum.

It reminded me 60s/70s album art, especially In The Court of the Crimson King:

Only trouble is, I don't think they were going for that.

Nice review. You were a little too generous though.

I agree with your review except that I actually assumed the Alpha Lantern history in Fatality's line was not an error (nor Boodikka); i.e., that in an alternate timeline Fatality became an Alpha Lantern and being a long, dark-haired lady, she looked very similar to Boodikka as an AL. However, you guys are probably right and I'm probably giving them too much credit.

Those timeline splashes we've seen represent a character's past, not alternate timelines or futures. It was nothing but a massive screwup. (Though the other splashes have indeed had their own problems.)

We are NOT in the business of giving credit. Take it back!

Oh yeah, I think you're right. It's just hard to believe that not only could the creators do that but the editor miss.

Man. This issue looked like crap. Totally boring plus the worst drawing style of John Stewart I've ever witnessed.
