  • Some bastard tried to swipe me!!!

I just won a page of original artwork from GL: Mosaic #2. It's page 4 by Cully Hamner. It's a beautiful page with John flying. A couple of guys tried to outbid me, but my highest bid was pretty high, and was never in any danger of losing it. At 25 seconds left, it was at a mere 36 bucks. Within that last 25 seconds, some guy tried to swipe me, and bumped it up to 66 bucks!

I have no problem paying it and it'sworth much more to me than that, it just irritates me that people still try to swipe! My motto is, I put the very highest I'm willing to pay...then a couple of bucks beyond that. If someone outbids me, good for them.

Anyway, he lost and I won. Another page of GL history coming to my personal collection!

I thought swiping was the name of the game? I routinely put auctions on "Watch" and wait until the last 40 seconds before swooping into them with my bids.

In many of these cases, though, it's actually the seller himself bumping things up with a dupe account. Testing the waters to see how high your max bid is, then, retracting bids accordingly until he's juuust under your max bid.

At least you did win, though - I bet it was a rooster or a bug who tried it, they're known for such things.

But wouldn't it just make more sense to bid what you want the first time and be done with it?

How would they retract a bid? Isn't it binding? I figure sellers try to bump things up with dup accounts, but if they went too far and won they could just resell it again. Didn't know I could back out once I've placed a bid.

Yes, but that only works if you can trust everyone else watching the same item to do the same.

No, and it's quite easy. Just hit "Bid History" after you've bid and click on "Retract a Bid" and it guides you from there. Just takes a few seconds.

Oh, GL fandom is a small comunity. There's a pretty good chance that I know, know of, or have encountered most people interested in a page like this.

Anyway, I won, and at a price I was willing to pay. I've already paid for it too, so now I can just look forward to getting it in the mail baby! I'm in a good mood now!

I just bid the most I'm willing to. If they beat me, they must've wanted it more than I did.

Huh! Good to know in case I bite off more than I can chew sometime. I've gotten much more disciplined than I used to, but you never know when that may come in handy. Thanks!

I'm the worst kind of bidder... a day or so before the auction is to end, I'll bid a huge ammount, see what the next highest bidder's bid is, retract the bid and then slam it with 30 seconds left with a few cents more than that highest bid... I don't do it often, but I did it once or twice just recently on some big comic lots. Yeah... its cheating... but if it lets you do it, why not be smart with it?

The problem with the ability to retract a bid is, a seller can fuck with the buyer. What's the point of supposedly keeping your highest bid secret? That's obviously NOT true if another buyer can jack it up to see what your cutoff point is, then back out. I mean, if they want to do it to snipe you, oh well, they just outbid you. But it does seem like a sleazy practice where the seller can pretty much fraud the buyer.

Ahh, I almost always go with the Buy It Now feature anyway. I don't actually bid on much anymore. After hearing this, I may just go back to Buy It Now and stick with that.

Yeah, its actually sellers jacking up bids that made me stop bidding early... slamming an auction is the only way to go... that also prevents people from bidding high, retracting and outbidding by a few cents. Bidding with less than a minute left is the smartest and safest way to bid.

I bid alot (probably way too much) but it is in fact the name of the game. The item isn't YOURS until the auction ends so, it's fair game. I have actually lost auctions for the past 3 weeks because I get popped in the last 60 secs and have been to busy to check.

                          Them's the breaks I guess

Live auctions are sooooo mcuh more brutal. Ya'll should try it. Went to a Heritage Auction one in Baltimore and it was fucking brutal, would get smoked before the gavel hit on the final round every single time.

                            Yo.

if he had waited another 10+ secs to jump in, that technique wouldve been how *I* win my auctions; not a "swipe", but a "snipe".

thats how I won my 32in. flat screen HD tv.
