  • Guy, Major Force, and Lethal Force Enabled

So the thread about Hal killing got me to thinking about what Guy's views on lethal force are now.

Interestingly, he's a character that has declared several times that he's not a killer -- most recently in the Corpse arc, I think -- and yet, he once intentionally killed an already-defeated Major Force with a surpising amount of forethought and rationality. Force had just killed Mace, had murdered a random lady thinking it was Guy's mom, and had killed Kyle's girlfriend, but this wasn't a lashing-out-in-grief-stricken-rage murder. Guy had time to think about it a little, to watch Kyle start to kill and then decide not to, to raise Force up off the ground, have a little chat with Kyle, and then kill. With a blade made of his own arm, no less. That's a personal kind of kill. And I'm not doubting that he was angry and grieving and probably a little bit irrational at the time even if it didn't show on the surface, but still, it wasn't a heat of the moment thing.

Nevermind that Force later came back. At the time, I'm sure there was no question in Guy's mind that the guy was dead. Kyle even declared him dead. In fact, I'd say that the fact that Force came back only to go and "murder" Arisia would only reinforce Guy's justification for killing the guy in the first place.

Anyway... I'd love to see Guy and Kyle have a chat about the lethal force thing, just as a callback to this whole thing with Major Force. At the time, Kyle couldn't bring himself to kill, but Guy could, and neither of them judged the other for the choice they made. It was a really great character moment for them both, both separately and as a pair.

    Thoughts?

Well, that wasn't the only time he killed either.
As far as i know, when GUY became a GL during COIE he killed Qwardians, even threatened to kill Hal's rogues if they didn't follow his orders, and left Hal to die at one stage.
Now the killswitch could have been switched off after that, seeing that he was part of the breakaway faction of the Guardians, he was their Sword, with specific instructions to destroy the Anti-matter universe (and in turn kill the AM).

As Warrior he killed a number of Tormocks!
Even most recently in CD he indirectly killed terrorists and again a few more Tormocks( but you know what i think of CD ).

So it's not out of place for GUY to kill, however he did say in GLC # 17 regarding Lethal Force:
" Ill embrace whatever i have to, red. But I choose when to do the embracin'."
He still tells Soranik to get used to the killing, as there's going to be plenty more before the nights out.

Now GUY has never said he's never killed before, but rather if the circumstances left him with no alternative then he would. He almost did until the Lost Lanterns and the rest of the GLC arrived.

GUY, out of the 4 earth lanterns, under the new law, would probably be the first to kill IMO!
But the fact that he's killed in the past has probably left a bitter taste in his mouth, so to speak. Like he say's to Von Daggle at the end of the "Dark side of green" arc:
"Killing someone, that's the easy way out. Making the scum of the universe face the music..... that's more my style."
What we see here is GUY'S growth as a character IMO.
Before he was a shoot first ask questions later GL, now he questions the motives for killing! I love this about GUY, he never says he won't kill, but rather says it's too easy! That particular circumstance did not require the Dominators execution as he was incapacitated and no lives were at risk!

GUY in all honesty will kill when he's ready and not a moment sooner!
:On worlds afar or scenes at home, wherever the cause should make me roam, always i vow to fight the good fight, to combat evil with all green lanterns might!:

Guy is the type that will do what it take when its crunch time, and if that means killin, than he'll make that decision.

I think that When guy is wearing this ring he wouldn't kill. where as when not wearing it he might.

Well isn't this exactly why the Guardians made the Alpha lanterns? To keep people like guy in line?

That's my thought. He knows that as soon as the ring is on, a certain set of expectations are on him.

COIE you can pretty much say Guy wasn't in his right mind. He just came out a coma he spent years in and was filled with rage towards everybody.

GG:W. Without getting into the powers debate the powers did cure Guy's brain damage so he was alot more rational at this time. Guy didn't want to kill Force but knew it had to be done. He was a certified sociopath and had killed people for fun. That isn't a person that should be allowed to roam free even by real world standards.

Guy isn't a killer but he will if needed.

I almost forgot about that interaction, but I think that set up the way Guy relates to Kyle in the 3rd series. Guy asked Kyle why he didn't kill Major Force. Kyle responded that that wasn't the hero he wanted to be, not what the ring was about. Guy said some of them were meant to be heroes and some were meant to be Warriors.

At that time, I figure Guy felt that the Green Lantern ring was passed to Kyle, but now that he's a Lantern again, he sets himself to a higher standard.

That said, I think he'd still utilize Lethal Force if necessary.
