  • The Official ION Thread

This thread is for those of us who liked Kyle as the host for the willpower entity, as well as for those who believe he should reclaim the power. I'll admit, when the change first happened in the first half of Judd Winick's GL run I was upset. Like many I didn't think Kyle needed to be anything different. But then I warmed up to the idea, and that original costume. Then I was excited when Marz came back to Kyle and wrote him as a new Ion.

I'm not a fan of Sodam. During the course of the New Guardians series I hope that Kyle as well as others in the NG's become the hosts for their Corps' entities.

Which Ion/Kyle did you like better? The original showed a wider range of powers, while the second was being taken nowhere fast by editorial who wanted to change the character up for the Sinestro Corps War. Of course there's also the Sodam fans....

i always did like Kyle's 1st go as ION (so i voted for it)

(^ just so you know i made this one )

he was more god-like and could do more then any GL before him has ever or will ever do (also cause unlike Hal he didn't go all evil lol), if only his 2nd go had looked like this

    or even this

    < link here

i'd of voted for it, sadly it did not but i will say that Yat has a nice look to him

Loved Winick's Power of Ion story. Definitely a high point in Kyle's career as Green Lantern.

I never read Marz's Ion series. I didn't hear good things about it so I didn't bother. Do you guys think it's worth picking up?

IMHO, the first six issues read much as it should have. It established a new setting and supporting cast for Kyle while he dealt with the GL energies and Starheart energies settling inside of him [some one year after he got them, I'd hoped we'd see more of the missing year]. You get to see both Effigy and Nero in this half. I won't spoil it any more than that.

The second half of the maxi went a few different directions. We got Pasarin on art for the better part, a Capt. Atom/Monarch cameo, Tangent characters, then the stuff with Donna Troy, Graven, and Kyle's mother dying.

I enjoyed every single issue. I never warmed up to Greg T's art, but the maxi introduced me to my current favorite GL artist in Pasarin. I wish the costume would've looked more like it did on the #1 cover [along with the domino mask sized mask he got by issue #6], but the interiors quickly changed how the costume was interpreted later on.

The only part I hated about the Maxi, is that even tho the cover of No. 1 looked great, no one seemed to be able to draw the costume correctly. They always messed up the symbol. They always drew it with a half-circle with a bar under it. Anyone with half a brain can see that the shapes on Kyles chest, the circle and telephone receiver thingy help to form a Lantern shape in the star-field on his body. *Don't know what the first ION costume represented,,,,looked like the YMCA emblem*

My main gripe was the costume/art as well. Marz writing was the only thing that saved it. I'll admit the backgrounds looked great at times but the guy's figures and faces always seem off. He ruined the return of Black Bolt in the FF for me and now I'm probably gonna drop the book.

The first Ion suit was meant to make him look more Godly. The white areas always had a glow to them to help with this. The strange shape on his torso I always saw as a stylized 'i' with the circle being the dot. The original suit was green with black instead of white with green in one panel at the end of GL #145.

I'm a fan of any design that can pull off a lot of white areas. It's why I liked Bart's Impulse costume so much as well as Outburst from the Supermen of America.
