TonyBedard talks team dynamics of Green Lantern: New Guardians

CBR News caught up with Bedard for a discussion about the team dynamic now that Larfleeze has joined the group, as well as brand new villain Invictus' connection to the Corps, and what the upcoming "Secrets Of The Indigo Tribe" arc in writer Geoff Johns' "Green Lantern" means for "New Guardians."

Good read. It's a shame that Bedard is still shackled by Geoff Johns' "vision" of the Lanternverse, but he seems to be planning some really cool stories. Certainly better than the disappointments in the other books.

I kinda like the fact that other than Kyle, the other ring bearers will be coming and going. I do wish though that some of the "revelations of the other Corps" would be handled in this book. Seems a shame that it looks like GL has been turned into a cop buddy book. Would be nice to see Kyle deal with the Zamorans and see how they will deal with the Guardians new plot. But I have a feeling that that will happen after the Indigo Tribe arc. Munk will show up and then Fatality will leave, etc.

I'd also like to see Kyle face off against the Controllers again. Those arcs in Vol. 3 were great fun to read.

I think Bedard has the best sounding plots really compared to the rest. His characterization of a few characters seem off, but hopefully he can get back from being good to kickass again.

I also wouldn't mind seeing Controllers again, or any other character from the past, like Lianna or maybe any of the characters from the failed new corps Kyle started as they get a different ring and have to learn the basics of that specific one; although right now who they have is also really great, even though I'm curious on how Bedard will handle first the red lantern problem with Bleez leaving, and then seondly having to handle not having an Indigo after that.

Hopefully better than Tomasi handled Emerald Warriors when it was forced to go to "War" mode.

Agreed. I hate that Geoff is the only one who can have the big reveals in his GL book. Every single new Corps was introduced in GL, while GLC was left to pick up pieces here and there.

I'd like to see at least one Controller show up again. Maybe even have some people show up in refurbished Darkstar armor....

"Sins of the Star Sapphire" is the exception to that. By far the most developmental lantern story not written by Johns.

I second that. Such an underrated story.

I absolutely agree. Best Tomasi written GL arc of the series.

I've yet to read this interview (and will), but the truth is that to me GLNG has been a really bad book. No character development, constant mischaracterization, fights after fights, poor dialogue... Imo, it's the most badly written book of the bunch.

1 page of Animal Man contains more story (and a much more intelligently written one, at that) than the first 4 issues of this series.

EDIT: ok. Read it. Nothing here to change my mind. Nothing surprising either. NG is a scrap book. A "left overs" book. Johns' trash is Bedard's treasure.Yeah, i got that already.

Dropped this book and won't be picking it up again any time soon.

I have to totally disagree. with a book that stars 7 characters a beginning has to be established, but unlike some books, the writer has decided to ramp up tha action until as such a time he can slow it for characterization. I like the pace, build a huge story arc with a huge threat and make the characters work together despite their differences. Then after triumphing each one has something in common with the other. Yeah I admit it feels forced, but the whole concept of the book is that these characters are thrust on each other and to survive they must band together, overcome the obstacle and find larger reasons to cooperate. It's definately not a "buddy" book. Thses guys don't like each other, but gotta try to work as a team, or they all lose in the end. I LOVE IT. Hats off to Bedard, and I'm liking Kirkam's art as well.

After reading that I have hope for GLNG. I have given up on the total and utter trash RL and GLC have turned into, and I wish if Sinestro is going to be the star of GL then Hal would just be left alone for a while.

Bedard seems to have ideas in mind and has a plan so long as Johns and DC editorial don't screw it up. Sadly it seems like most of the New 52 books are supposed to be simplified action stories which has caused the depth and plotting to disappear in to many books.

My only problem with "in-depth" books is that DC has fallen into the Marvel syndrome of making simple plot develope span 17 titles and 20 issues of each title. I was going to get the "fear itself" story, but was going broke trying to keep up.
