  • Crossovers hurting New Guardians?

Is it just me or have the crossovers really hindered this title? During the first year they were forced to juggle characters back and forth that they had to share with the other books.

Now in this year it feels like we're getting compressed storytelling with Kyle mastering all the emotions within 4 issues. Hell we didn't even see him maser compassion, we just came into it mid lesson. What's worse is that the entire issues aren't even dedicated to the mastery, but split with Carol's stuff that's not really needed.

Hopefully after the 3rd army, we'll get less cross overs. Hopefully after this, it will just be Kyle, but knowing DC, we'll have to put up with the rainbow corps even longer in the title!

Crossover hinder all titles creatively. Publishers just don't care because crossovers make more money.

I don't know if it's crossovers exactly, but there seems to be a lot of editorial dictation with the book. I just can't see that first arc with invictus lasting that long. It seems liek they said "okay, the first arc should take all year" to everyone.

And with this 3rd army arc the crossover means that we have much fewer issues to deal with actually exploring the spectrum meaningfully.

But a part of this blame falls on the writer. I mean ... he could have handled the material better and with more consistancy that he's shown, even with the constraints given.

I don't mind having the skittle brigade. It's one of the reasons I like the book, because you get to see a focus on more obscure characters. I just feel like the pacing of this series is all over the place. First story arc was too slow for the story it was telling and this arc is way too fast.

Frankly, given that the core concept of the book seems to be having members of all the Corps working together for some reason or other, I think GL-wide crossover stories are about all that holds the title together in any semblance of coherence. Yes, they could be handled better than they are (the whole mastering the spectrum thing IS too abbreviated), but the main problem with the title, in my mind, is that all these folks working together at all makes no sense unless there is some huge, universe-shattering threat to deal with. Crossovers at least provide THAT aspect. Without them, I'm at a a loss as to what the point of the title, as currently concieved, is. I'd far rather have it go to being primarily a Kyle title, with maybe some of the more natural allies among the other colors being occasionally appearing supporting cast. But if they insist on it being about the whole freakin' rainbow of colors? They NEED the large-scale disasters crossovers provide to make it make any sense, IMHO.

The GL-related title that is MOST being hurt by crossovers, IMHO, is Red Lanterns. It seemed like it HAD a direction it wanted to go in at some point, but it has been totally derailed at this point, and crossovers are a big part of the reason why, IMHO.

Now maybe the title would have still been a disappointment had it gone it's own way and stuck to an independent direction involving vengeance on the deserving, and the struggles of Rankorr to adjust to his new state, but at least then it would have sucked on its own "merits" so to speak.
