Was it stated his father is no longer Mexican in this issue? I guess I must have missed out on that.

Also wasn't happy at first that the first lantern can bend reality. That seems like overkill for someone who can just control light. But the white light represents life so I guess reality warping is just another aspect of that.

Also makes me wonder why the Guardians didn't turn into white lanterns and learn how to reality bend as well and not go through the trouble of creating all these corps.

Life has nothing to do with reality bending.

The New 52 was the perfect excuse to fix that nonsense, but no, they had to go right on and say it's an emotion. Stupid.

Eh, I can see how it'd work. Calling the whole thing "the emotional spectrum" is a pretty big misnomer, but I can see how will/determination can be a driving force. Although it's really not perfect. But this is not (and has rarely been) the deepest of comics around.

I enjoyed this issue. I liked the art on this title more than I have in a good while and it had some emotional bite to it (same with the GL:Corps First Lantern issue). I'm not getting hung up on the continuity guffs because I haven't been reading for as long as some of you; just not as invested in the history of GL but I like this new First Lantern arc.

all that had come b4 the mexican thing was that his father had left his mother, that she didnt really demonize him about it to the boy, and him apparently being some type of govt operative which he learned from his uncle who was a grifter; that he was Chicano didnt change anything (altho I think we only saw the guy 1 other time & then never again), so I wouldnt call that a retcon.

maybe un-necessary, but not a retcon.

In one of the GL 80 Page Giant issues we're given a story that has Hal meeting Kyle's father who's using some alias [Mr. Black I think] in another spin on Hal's origin. Long story short, after finding out Hal's secret the government agent reveals a secret of his own... that his real name is/was Aaron Rayner. It was also established in another 80 Page Giant issue that Kyle's grandfather's last name was Rayner and part of Buck Wargo's monster hunting crew. Add to that his evil uncle's last name was Rayner in the actual monthly and it's pretty clear Winick didn't do any homework before coming on to GL and just put a Real World spin on the comic. The ONLY think that kept me around after the first Winick arc was Dale Eaglesham on pencils and the mighty MOOSE on colors. And after issue #150 Jim Lee did covers for awhile which was a big plus....

Haven't touched the GL books in awhile [issue #6 was the last of them all for me] but if this touches on Kyle's backstory then I should pick it up. I'm interested in seeing where he goes as a White Lantern and if the similarities to Silver Surfer will have Ron Marz coming back sooner or later on writing.
