Why couldn't they have just gone with the originial plan for Emerald Twilight? That way, Hal's character wouldn't have been ruined, and we'd still have Kyle. Does anybody know exactly who came up with the idea for Hal to go insane?

It was probably the editorial team of Eddie Berganza and Kevin Dooley. The original Emerald Twilight script by Gerard Jones was probably not "controversial" enough for them seeing as it was following on the heels of Superman's death and resurrection and Batman's Knightfall.

I honestly thought that the Emerald Twilight script of Gerard Jones really didn't have as much impact as the one that we now have. If I were to see the ads for that, I wouldn't be too convinced to buy it, unlike the one that eventually came out. Like it or not, the one that came out sold like crazy.

And factoring in GL was selling considerably worse than either Batman or Superman prior to the Doomsday or Bane storylines.

I'm so glad they didn't turn Hal into "Protector" - it's such a lame-ass generic name Hal probably would've been killed soon after anyway.

I've always thought they should've made the new GL a woman after "Emerald Twilight". It'd certainly make the cast more diverse now that the gang's back together.

Well having read through the info on the original plans for GL I've come to realize that I really don't like it any better than I like ET. It's not bad, but it is a bit BTDT and frankly I really hate the idea of the Guardians killing Hal's dad so he could become the bestest Green Lantern ever.

This ties into my second comment. I once thought like O'Neil and Andrew NDB about Hal. But I feel that his handling under Geoff has proven me wrong. What was needed was to knock the character down a peg or two to a level where someone might have a hope of relating to him. I like the idea that Hal doesn't think he's a super star any more nor does he want to be. He simply wants to be a good man and a good cop. This is someone I could actually hang out with as opposed to the one who came off as if he knew better than anyone else and the universe be damned. The really nice thing was just when a little of the old Hal was sneaking back (The lost lanterns storyline where he ignores the Guardians to go and rescue the lost lanterns) he winds up rescuing a bunch of people who hate him and not entirely without reason and it takes Guy lying for him to keep him from getting bounced out of the Corps entirely.

Ultimately while it's fun to look at what might have been given what Geoff and company have done with ET and where the Lantern titles are and where they are headed I've made my peace with both ET and its aftermath.

that sounded pretty awesome, and I like the space opera aspect to it. I think I like the Parallax Emerald Twilight better though, simly because his downfall made for a very itneresting story for me.
