Don't really read about kyle that much so I'll have to pick Hal.Sure Kyle is interesting from what I've read of him but Hal takes the cake as far as I'm concerned"History is a mirror of the past and a lesson of the present." - Persian Proverb

When you look at it like this - The story that destroyed Hal was so out of character that it's not even funny. I think Johns' rebirth both made sense, fixed a lot of age old issues with the entire franchise and was a hell of a story.
They could have easily introduced the "Peter Parker" Lantern Kyle without destroying the corps legacy. But they had a crazy idea that Kyle could only work if he was the only Lantern.
Now we have both Hal and Jordan and it's been proven that they both can exist without compromising character.

I think there isn't a character that actually _NEEDS_ another character that share his legacy to be erased for completely to have a reason for existing. The problem is more how the characters get there, and in a lot of cases it coincides with their mentor/predecessor death. The problem arises when said mentor/predecessor get back from the death - as they usually do: the one that came second becomes redundant and a lot of their 'theme' as legacy heroes is invalidate by the comeback so they normally lose a lot in terms of character. I have so much more to say about this as all my fav characters are second generation heroes that have been, one way or another, screwed up by Di Dio's silver age nostalgia, but point is that, yes, okay, it was dumb to erase Hal and the Corps, I can get that, but such a big part of Kyle's story was built about the fact he lucked out and was the last of his kind that I can't think of how he can be the same character without this factor.
As things are now, they'd better get rid of Kyle instead of dragging his now useless character around like they do now -and this comes from someone that loves Kyle a lot :|
I don't think Hal in ET was OOC, though. Rushed, okay, but there's so much potential for losing sanity for a guy that has a power based on his willpower I don't think it was that off that one GL was someday likely to snap if facing a huge failure of his own. And the Guardians act very inhumaly to him, pushing the whole situation to the limit. Poor Hal... =(

The Kyle angle was about the same as using Crisis on Infinate Earths to get rid of decades of continuity and trim the Superman family down so there was a reason to follow a particular character when at the time there were loads floating around with the same abilities.
With the GLC as it is now then there are too many Lanterns in one place at one time.Goodbye Christopher Hitchins 1949 - 2011
