  • BLACKEST NIGHT Comic Con Panel

Ian Sattler kicks things off by promoting a Hal Jordan SDCC figure giveaway as well as the Green Lantern: First Flight DVD hitting this Tuesday.

Sattler brings up the stars - editor Eddie Berganza, GLC artist Patrick Gleason and, of course, Geoff Johns. Sattler does a bit of an audience survey of what they love and what they want to see.

Johns says he's happy to have the issue out, and that it's been a lot of work and coordination between all the editorial staff and creators. Mentions Aquaman kicks ass in issue #2. Firestorms meet in #3. Wonder Woman mini with Rucka - Blackest Night Maxwell Lord. Flash mini with Geoff and Scott Kolins.

Berganza gives a shout out for Blackest Night: Batman. This is something that has been mentioned several times at the show. Johns mentions how he moved to NYC for several months to plan and execute the event.

Blackest Night: Titans is by new writer JT Krul. Has Terra, Beast Boy, Cyborg, Kid Flash, etc. Ed Benes is the artist.

Johns mentions GLC by Tomasi and Patrick Gleason. GL features Sinestro taking on Carol Ferris. Black Rings will be seeking out other Corps members. Agent Orange will get a taste of his own. We'll learn more about the Indigo Tribe. Oa will be attacked by Black Lanterns. You see a glimpse of that in Blackest Night #1, but GLC #39 will go from prison riots to a Black Lantern assault.

The Black Rings aren't about who's dead. They're about who was alive. Sue/Ralph Dibny are just the beginning of the emotional conflict in Blackest Night. The rings seek out who matters to our heroes. Two issues of Booster Gold will see him facing off with Ted Kord. All about emotional growth and conflict for the characters. If it wasn't, it'd be a zombie flick with no humanity. Johns says all of the Corps represent the emotional core, represent our lives and the complexity of how these interact is really fun for him to write.

Fans will learn a lot about the nature of the universe in Blackest Night as well as the big villain behind everything and much more. Johns says each project/mini functions as its own event, its own dedicated story to that character or franchise. The goal here is to really explore, define and build up other characters and franchises. Johns mentions the importance of Mera from the Aquaman world. Likens her to the queen from 300.

In Blackest Night: Superman, Smallville is besieged by the Earth-2 Superman. But Krypto is there!

What's the deal with the charge on the Black Rings? The Lanterns are charging in unison, but Johns doesn't want to spoil anything.

Johns thanks the fans for supporting Green Lantern so much. To see everyone getting into it with the shirts, toys and so on, he's really happy and thinks it's a great time to be a GL fan.

Wonder Woman will be in the Blackest Night series as well as Rucka's mini. She has one of the biggest moments she's ever had in her history, Johns thinks.

Will there be some sort of entity coming from all this? Geoff thinks that what fans will see isn't quite what they're expecting. He knows there's a lot of speculation but thinks the end isn't quite what people believe.

Is there a "winner" in the War of Light or does Blackest Night stop everything? Johns says the War continues on throughout. There are winning sides, but it's more complex than simply "I win."

Why are Orange Lanterns his favorites? He wanted to create a muppett character that had been left outside for a week - all dirty and worn down. Tried to think of two words that were dirty - lard and sleeze - thus Larfleeze. Brings up the idea of avarice and how we tend to have too many things. We tend to acquire as much as possible. Brings up Claim Jumper's massive portions or the many, many editions of Kingdom Come. We'll see the Orange Lantern oath in Blackest Night. When Larfleeze sees the Black Ring, he says "gimme!" where other people freak out.

Bringing back '40s JSA heroes that died like Sandman, Starman? Yes. Berganza says there's a reason we see those graves, that "dead heroes" spread.

Why is Dex-Star so angry? It's not because he got kicked out of a house. Dex-Star will fight Krypto. It'll be very fun.

Johns mentions death is a weird thing in comics. It's a heavy subject in life but in comics it's not finite, it's used to reboot characters and more. Johns wanted to address this in reality, in comics and why they're different. Why does it act the way it does in comics?

Is Nekron involved? Johns can't talk about it.

Avatar of Death? Black Hand is the avatar. It's in Green Lantern #43. We'll learn where these avatars came from, what they are, what their origin is. We'll find out why they exist. All in Blackest Night. Predator. Ion. Parallax.

Johns didn't want to just have typical zombies. He wants these guys to be personal. This is a horror story, but not really a zombie story.

Is the Black Energy itself evil? Can it only be used for evil things or is it being manipulated? You'll learn more about what it is and what it means. It's not really evil or good. It doesn't really have those components.

More to be learned about Scar and before she was burned by the Anti-Monitor? She was proper and devoid of emotion until that encounter. The darkness began to influence her. Do you want to bring order to the universe? This is what you have to do.

Johns believes all the GL and GLC teams will be on those books for a very, very long time.

If Hal gets a purple ring, does he turn into a woman? No. But if you like Star Sapphires, you learn a lot about them in GL #45.

Fan doesn't understand how Black Hand is the entity... what about Anti-Monitor? Anti-Monitor is actually more like food, a much lesser presence than the entity.

Is there a possibility that Sinestro will wear a green ring again? You'll see more into his mindset throughout the storyline.

Johns wanted Hal to not always know what his Dad's last words were... but maybe we'll find out.

To become an Orange Lantern, you have to die. Will we see Orange Lantern's original bodies rise? "Larfleeze would not like that very much, would he? Keep reading. Great question," said Johns.

In issue #3 you'll find out more about the black rings. Something surprising.

Black Lanterns are talking. Is something making them talk or is that them talking? Keep reading.

White Lanterns in the end? You'll have to keep reading.

More between Hal Jordan and Carol Ferris relationship coming up? Yes.

All Corps will have entities/avatars? Yes.

Monitors in Blackest Night? No. (Audience applause)

Can men join Star Sapphires? Yes, but most aren't worthy.

Why Black Hand? Why the loser villain into this creation? Johns loved the name. He likes revamping villains. Mentions he'll be on Flash again. Black Hand stuck out to him. As he developed the spectrum, he loved the absence of light and thought Hand fit well and would be interesting. Cracked into him just like he cracked into Sinestro and Captain Cold. Wanted this guy to be just out of his mind.

Gleason shares a studio with Mahnke. Johns mentions the creators involved with GL franchise are all friends. They know each other really well.

Fan is curious about RIP and whether it's connected to Blackest Night. When Joker is talking about the "real joke" - dying and coming to life. Batman talking to the Monk about darkness in Batman's heart. The very end of RIP, Bruce says he's seen pure evil. Johns says he loves Grant, RIP, but those items don't connect to Blackest Night.

More Kyle Rayner? You'll see a lot more of him. Will he become a Blue Lantern? No.

Secret Files for Green Lantern released near Sinestro Corps War. Johns has discussed something "similar but in a different format" with Dan DiDio.

Cyborg Superman and the Manhunters coming in 2010.

Question about DC's policy regarding storyline driven events. Johns mentions that he doesn't believe editorial influence should be an excuse. If editors are meddling, then walk away and/or have your name taken off. "It doesn't matter where the ideas come from. A good idea is a good idea" - Johns referencing something Richard Donner told him once. If the editors have suggestions or changes that Geoff doesn't want to do, they'll talk it through.

Queen of the little "gremlins" that took Black Hand. She'll be a big character in GL next year.

Alan Scott's power is similar to GL's but Alan's is magical and Hal's is more of a science. Geoff says they'll get into it but "it appears to be magic based." Says we'll definitely find out more.

Johns went to Edwards Air Force Base for two days for research. Has pilots go through his scripts to check accuracy.

Guardians bleed yellow. They wanted a yellow shielding just in case the GLC turned on them.

Johns is really excited about Ryan Reynolds as GL.

New Gods in Blackest Night? No.

    Undead Guardians left? Yes.

Barry's role as Black Flash? That'll be dealt with in Rebirth #4. Things aren't as they appear. He's being manipulated.

    2010 plans for Hector Hammond.

Black Hand, Glove and Mask should form to be Voltron.

To close out the panel, Geoff Johns leads the entire room through the GLC oath.

I'm betting Carol will die and his heart will have a "hole" in it, causing a her Violet Ring to glide onto his finger.

Good call, FreakJoker. Lots of little story nuggets...I've got to stop reading these interviews and actually be surprised at the books.

The DCU panel revealed some of the new JLA members...Donna Troy, Mon-El, Dick Grayson and Hal are all on-board. A couple of others to be revealed later! That looked interesting.

Sounds like they're keeping alota info close to the vest, nothing really "new" was revealed. I was hoping that the team for the JSA mini would be announced.
