Racial Profiling!
The thing I have come to understand about this character is the focus placed on racial profiling. It seems that our society is bent on so much FOCUS on sexual connotations and character ethnicity. Alan Scott is an example of how DC uses his character to exploit some cause for the publishers to go on a crusade. I by no means care whether he kisses a guy or a monkey in a panel, rather I care if his hero status and story is well written. This can be said of Simon Baz and his ethnic background, regardless if the concept if Geoff John's pet project with respect to whatever reasons he felt the need to do so. I grow bored of how this direct attention is to that BAZ is an Arab-American and all the media surrounding it. So Kyle is Caucasian, does that mean its within cultural norm and he deserved no focus on his heritage? So for us Lantern fans, let us be sure that we KNOW EXACTLY what his ethnicity is before the comic comes out to draw our ire and boost sales. Who gives a fuck if he is Canadian or otherwise, I seriously do not believe that the fact he is Arab-American will impact the whole persona of what it is to be a Green Lantern, rather it will be a play to boost profit and racial characterization on a particular product that is popular in the fans eyes. Hands down, BAZ sucks-only because I enjoy Hal Jordan, Kyle Rayner, and Guy Gardner....not because I am racist against Arab-Americans...SORRY
Rant over!!!

Johns is being super heavy-handed in introducing this Arab-American character. It's usually the biggest complaint about this kind of writing - that it's an issue-driven story rather than a story about a character. It should be about serving the story. This is just a "message" and I don't need to be preached to. I want to read about Green Lantern, not John's political agenda. (that's my complaint about O'Neil's GL/GA run as well)
As much as people were up in arms about Alan being gay, (and as much as DC made a big deal about it) Robinson was (uncustomarily) restrained about it. Alan is gay, but Simon Baz is being slapped up as a poster child for a cause. It's almost never good when a writer chooses to define a character by their race rather than it being just one aspect to them. It leaves the readers no choice but to do the same, and that's what I thought we were trying to get away from.
And do you *really* have to include 9/11 in the origin issue of an Arab-American character? I feel if Johns had showed some restraint, let us get to know him first, and then reveal this part of his history it might've seemed more to me than exploitative.Last edited by Kane2814; 09-06-2012, 02:31 AM.

4/5. I liked it. The art was nice and the writing was solid. I actually really enjoyed the "ERROR!!!!! you have the ability to overcome great fear." That was slick and should stir up some fun down the road. Also nice to see Michigan getting a lot of shout outs. I look forward to meeting Mr. Johns this week!

I liked Agent Fed more than I liked Simon. Simon really didn't have anything special to him. Also I loved the end with Waller and Fed. Loved seeing Cyborg and Batman if anyone checked on Hal after he quit. Also my two favorite parts were the Epilogue with Hal and Sinestro in the Black Ring (Knew that they were going to be in it still.) and the Who's Who being Hal Jordan not Simon or Sinestro showing that this will most likely become Hal's book again and Simon can get his own book or get thrown into GLC.
Also anyone else feel that Agent Fed should've become the new GL not Simon? Because I still am feeling more for Fed than Simon.Last edited by GreenLantern888; 09-06-2012, 03:41 AM.No Sir, I punched the viceroy in the stomach, then I headbutted him in the face. Sir.-Hal Jordan

What a waste of an issue. It's like the GL world was litterally put on hold to tell me a story I didn't want to know about. Hal and Sinestro show up on the last page, the rest of it was spent poorly.
Mostly, I'm bothered that they tried so hard to do the ol' "everybody thinks he's a terrorist but he's not" thing. I really am not in the mood for that. Given what the authorities know about him, I'd be waterboarding his ass all night long too. I really didn't care for the tone taken making the agents and soldiers look in a bad light.
And the bit about the agent who had a child killed on 9/11? How frigging blatant is THAT? Trying WAY too hard there. I felt like Johns was trying as hard as he could to hit me over the head with his soapbox and I am just not feeling it. Liberal you may be Mr Johns, but Denny O'Neil you AINT.
Why is Waller thin and hot? Lame.
Pretty art, but it couldn't save this issue.
There are too many human GLs now, and not enough room to do anything with them. This guy doesn't need to even exist; he's just one more thing the writer is doing to put his stamp on the book.
You could kill him next issue and I wouldn't even blink. Time to bring back Hal Fucking Jordan and start telling Green Lantern stories. This was litterally a waste of a month.

People can take offense anywhere in this book if they're thinking about it in a wrong-headed way.
BTW: Waller's looked like that for the whole new52. She's been thin in Suicide Squad.Last edited by Space Cop; 09-06-2012, 01:56 PM.

I know this is nitpicking but that "Who's Who" thing got me off to a bad start (read it first). "First Appearance: Green Lantern #1 (2011")!? Really? What happened to GL continuing the same continuity?
According to Mahnke's interview with Newsarama you're "wrong-headed" by being offended by this issue.
