So constant retcons then are okay, but constant retcons now are not? I don't get it. Make up your mind!
And Volthoom? There goes my theory that the first lantern was a time travelling Sinestro. Now it's the nU52 version of Earth 3's Power Ring benefactor. At least THAT opens up some good possibilities.
Agreed! I'm assuming he'll look very different in his "true" form, which works since Volthoom's point of origin changed after CoIE, and there's been a few crises since then. And for all we know, it might even be a new character with the same name.

Well, Earth-3's / the antimatter Universe's Crime Syndicate were in a different reality with a different braniac and Lex Luthor. There's no problem with this being a different Volthoom. I think it's a neat little nod to an obscure character.

It looks like GL is FINALLY going to tackle the 3rd Army storyline, just like the title says on the cover. The resolution to the "Baz the terrorist" story is rather abrupt, but it was satisfying enough and it's really not the story I'm buying GL for so I'm glad it's over.

Startin gto see why Baz is going to carry a gun now. Although it's something I can't see lasting too long.

The man needs to find a one way ticket to Guantanamo Bay for an extended vacation. And give Hal his ring back.

And I agree with Guantlet about the Volthoom thing. By making a nod to an obscure character from ANOTHER universe, they can do pretty much anything with it and not piss people off. It's not like it's Alan Scott being light in the loafers; how many Volthoom fans are out there? Seems to me like there's some actual opportunity here. Especially where I had it in my head it was just going to be some future version of Sinestro or another GL mainstay in a time travel senario.

I can picture all these Volthoom support groups coming out of the woodwork, demanding the head of Dan Didio!

But once again, as I did when they used "Krona", I'm forced to ask, "Why? Why bother?"

If you are going to make an essentially new character, why give it the name of an old one at all? How does that benefit anybody? I'm willing to bet that pretty much nothing we know about Volthoom will be relevant to this character, so why use the name at all? It doesn't offend me or anything (especially not in this case, since Volthoom is practically just a name to me, anyway) it just baffles me. I don't get the point of making nods to older continuity with character names when you are going to ignore the continuity you are nodding to. New readers won't get the reference, and old readers won't likely be impressed by it when you ditch all the continuity that goes with that name...

I'm just scratching my head here...

What I'd really like is a story that isn't centered on the emotional spectrum, which has been the norm since 2006 or 2007. Every story's been the same damned thing. C'mon, it's not like Superman only fights Kryptonians, or the Flash only faces speedsters!

How often does Johns ever create a new villain? From scratch? This is par for the course.

Why use the name Volthoom? Why NOT use the name Volthoom?

Not for nothing, but it did benefit my own experience with the comic.

The last one was probably what, Larfleeze?

Doesn't the Third Army count as "from scratch"?

They're a fairly generic force, not a supervillain per se.

Larfleeze and Atrocitus count I guess. They're connected to the lantern concept, but they are legitimate creations. Can't take that away from him, especially when they've done so well for DC.

But for the most part, he revamps other creations, which is a polite way of saying he tramples all over other creators work.
