  • Spider-Man Clone Saga [Return of Scarlet Spidey!?!]

I can't believe how much has been rewritten as far as the Clone Saga goes, some of the changes kinda bugged me at first but the final issue blew me away. Harry Osborn is alive and cloned his father, and in the end Ben Reilly lives! He rides off into the sunset. Sadly, when he returns full time.... I'll be buying everything he's in. Damn you Marvel....

It simplified a lot of things and a lot of the main plots were switched around. You only get to see Scarlet Spidey the 2nd and 3rd issue. By the 4th he's the new Spider-man, by the 5th he gets impaled by a returning Green Goblin who you THINK is still Norman. In the 6th and final issue it's revealed Harry never died and Norman works with Kaine and tells Kaine to return the Parkers' baby girl [another plot point revised, where is she now?]. Afterwards he tries to stop Harry who is sort of responsible for the Norman clone dying. Harry replies with something along the lines of....

"I can bring you back again. We will defeat Spider-Man!"

Some things were better but I was disappointed in the little things. For instance Ben didn't dye his hair blond until he became Spidey, in this mini he does it after meeting the real Peter for the first time in years. The writing was better than it was in the 90's and they touched on the confusion of who the real Peter was.

No female Doctor Octopus though, they use Otto Octavius.

i dont know how to feel.
i was a fan of the original clone saga and felt that although this was "how it was supposed to go down" i still found it shortened and lacking in story and depth.
does it open up a chance that reilly will return to the spidey verse? sure it does...or does it? mephisto's magic doesnt detail what happens to reilly and what not. and if he's never to be seen from again...that just sounds stupid.

Have the actually changed the 'canon' then?
Does this fit in the continuity or was it just an exercise in saying 'this is how it was supposed to happen before editorial changes?'

I never read the first clone saga but I did enjoy this. I rather liked the art too.
I LOVE conspiracy theorists. They are like human versions of the cymbal clapping, dancing monkeys. No one takes them all that seriously and they get bored with them after about 10 minutes.

It HAS to be canon now, because IIRC Harry will use the Iron Patriot armor to become the "American Son" when he makes another return in the modern MU. I don't know how the current Norman's story ended, if he degenerated at his final defeat as IP or what.

I LOVED the art. 'Ringo was my favorite artist and inspired my cartoony style. Nauck is a close second....

I don't think this was canon. More of a "this is how it was supposed to happen" thing.

from what i've read about it this is what WAS going to happen but they changed the director sometime before the end of the "real" Clone Saga, so with that being said i'd say this is more of a What If event

at any rate atleast with this we know what happens with/to spider-man's baby (WTF MARVEL, it takes a What If story to tell us )

Felt like Rebirth to me where it was just one big retcon. And on the last page of issue 6 it read "The End... or is it?"

I believe Tom DeFalco said he wasn't sure if the miniseries was in continuty or not. So I suppose it could go both ways.

This is not what was originally going to happen. Neither is this in-continuity. It's just a nice little What-if-storyline, presumably to test the waters if readers would support Ben Reilly's potential return in continuity.

Here is what was originally going to happen.

If he said he wasn't sure, he really meant it is. If this was a What If? story it would've had What If? on the cover. MC2 Spidergirl is coming back and the Spider-baby that never was finally will be when they rework Spidey's current situation with this mini. The Heroic Age will probably be connected to the next 2099 relaunch since it's mentioned so often in that future, and Clone Saga will affect Spidey and MC2's Spidergirl. I for one hope it happens. Look at what we get from Clone Saga....

1.) The return of Scarlet Spider

2.) The return of Harry Osborn with clones

3.) The return of the baby

                            4.) The return of Kaine

...I'll be the first to say in the 90's I was rooting for the clone to be the original Parker. I liked the Scarlet Spider better than almost every other version of Spidey except the original 2099 version. Let him live!

pretty sure they even announced it as a "how the writers originally wanted it to happen" story, just like they are doing with X-Men Forever, and the upcoming X-Factor Forever. Neither of these are in continuity either, just cool little glimpses into the supposed original plans the writers had. Basically, a way for Marvel to get more money. I really wouldn't get my hopes up about this being the new continuity Kid Lantern.
